Linux Client
Proton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Linux client for Proton Drive.

5k+ votes and 1k+ comments strongly suggest unmet demand. Even limited conversion from this group would likely cover development costs quickly. Proton Drive on Linux is a strategic gap, not a niche request.

I am a Proton Unlimited subscriber and I use Linux as my primary operating system for professional work.
At present, the lack of a native Linux client with local synchronization represents a significant operational limitation compared to Windows and macOS. For professional workflows, reliance on the web interface or unsupported third-party tools is not a sustainable solution.
Core business requirements such as automated sync, offline access, filesystem integration, and reliability cannot be met without first-class Linux support.
Many professional users choose Proton precisely because its values around privacy, security, and transparency align naturally with the Linux ecosystem. In this context, Linux support for Proton Drive should be considered a strategic capability, not a niche feature.
I would appreciate clarification on:
whether Proton Drive for Linux is planned or actively being evaluated
whether any form of prioritization or internal roadmap exists, even without specific dates
Please note that the availability of an official Linux client would directly influence our decision to continue and expand our professional use of Proton Drive across multiple Unlimited accounts. In its absence, we are forced to evaluate alternatives that provide native Linux support.

I moved to Linux (MX Linux, Debian derivative) after Windows 10 hit EOL. The lack of a Linux client has become a critical issue for me, since I may need to downgrade or terminate my Proton subscription so I can afford a cloud storage provider which I can use for sync on Linux.
I've tried multiple workarounds: Celeste, rclone, and wine. I have to conclude that cloud sync on Linux simply won't be possible for me unless I change providers or Proton releases a Linux client.

One of the many +1's to this conversation. Please, please, please bump this product up on the road map. Can't image the number of additional paying customers Proton would gain with a fully featured Drive linux client.
Desktop Linux is on the rise too! Better to catch the wave and ride it instead of trying to catch up to the wave as it's passing!

I won't be signing up for a subscription until Linux is catered for - crazy that your business model is privacy and security focussed but you ignore Linux development.

Would really love to be able to migrate from Dropbox to Proton Drive. Been hoping for this ever since I switched to Proton... when will it finally come?

2025 and still no linux client. I have an home server where my stuff sit and 500GB I pay for in Proton Drive that sit there unused because there is no way to have a script or apis from proton that allow me to backup my stuff.
What the actual ****?

Same as Ice Town below. I'm a paying customer and expected to have a Linux client by the end of 2025. This is not what I expected from Protonmail...
Still using Tresorit for my secure cloud backup. -

I've been a paying customer for several years now I was really hoping that Linux would have a client for drive by now. We have access to 2tb of proton drive but its simply useless without a linux client to us.
It's ridiculous that this, a serious privacy focussed request, has to be the top voted request here, Proton "Privacy by default". How is it possible that this is not even on the roadmap yet?

I followed many of the recommendations from this article:
https://proton.me/blog/european-tech-alternatives
I now have Linux installed on my personal and work computers. I am a Visionary and Business Suite subscriber. I expected that the Linux client would be released this year but instead we've gotten a steady stream of new apps and features that I don't need nearly as much as a native Proton Drive client for Linux.
Please don't promote Linux and then refuse to develop for it.

I can't tell you how much this issue should be pushed.
Please provide us with this 🙏 -

As a new paying customer, this is crucial. The only thing making me regret switching to Proton is the lack of a native Proton Drive app for Linux. Please add this.
Having to move to Windows is the opposite of privacy. -

I use Filen for now to sync from Linux, but would love to use Proton Drive, as I trust it more.

This app/service is the ONLY thing holding me back from going to Linux. I'm literally less private on macOS because Proton doesn't have a Linux app for Drive. At some point I'll have to find a more privacy-focused service to move to so I can get off of macOS and over to Linux.

Please give an update on this and put this as a top priority. Focusing on collaborative docs is helpful to some users, but what many need on Linux is a native client to sync with Drive. As many users said already, I've also been a paying customer for many years and I've been waiting for this feature for a while. it's really hard to understand that there is no focus on Linux.
As others, I'll consider switching off to another service if there is no progress announced on this. -

I recently switched to linux, this is definitely an issue, borderline dealbreaker for me, I have been a customer for 4 years. At least you should provide some cli tool for sync, something simple that could be called from time to time by cron or smth. I know about rclone and trying to use it but it is tricky, at least some good and verified instructions to setup some scripts for this would be welcome.

Please at least give a minimal support for the rclone implementation. I took a subscription to test all the features, but I am disappointed in the lack of Linux support.

Gaben Awesome commented
At the very least they should support the rclone implementation. Like that wouldn't even be that much work compared to a full blown client

I have been a paying customer almost 4 years. Proton does not do the job for me anymore without a Linux client for Drive. When my membership expires, unless there is a Linux client for Drive, I will have to move on to another service unfortunately. Cannot keep waiting and expending no matter how much I believe in their values.
