Create dedicated photo app
I know that the current plan is to fully integrate the photos feature into the Proton Drive app.
However, I think it would be more logical to have a dedicated app for photos and one for documents in general. With combined apps, I fear that the app either gets overloaded or features will be missing because it would get too crowded otherwise. The photos app also needs wayy better performance than the current app (at least on android, the photos feature is very slow and misses a lot of crucial features, like face detection, editing or a map to show where photos were taken).

This is a great idea! Why?
Recently I did a full opt-out from google photo's via Google takeout. Because Google makes a mess of things, it took me a lot of time to reorganize the EXIF data of my photos using separate scripts. Once that was done, I started importing my photos into Proton Photos.
However, my library is (almost) not usable. Organizing them into albums has its limitations. There are too many missing features.
A dedicated app, with more focus on usability and organizational options, is definitely my preference!

A dedicated photo app would seriously boost Proton’s appeal. With solid polish and performance, it could realistically pull users from iCloud and Google Photos.
I’d switch to Duo even now, but what’s missing is the refinement and smooth experience people expect from big tech products.
To be a real iCloud Photos alternative, the app should offer:
- Easy migration from Apple/Google, including cloud-only photos
- Preservation of album structure
- Fast uploads/downloads and smooth browsing
- Decent video loading times
- Smart management tools (duplicates, cleanup suggestions)
- Smart storage optimization, offloading older phots to cloud to save local storage like iCloud or Google Cloud does
- Optional facial recognition, powered by Lumo?
- Optional “Memories”-style albums, powered by Lumo?Without that level of quality and usability, it’s hard to fully replace iCloud Photos.

I agree that viewing photos on Proton Drive is a nightmare that needs improving, but a file is a file; I see no need to make separate storage apps for different kinds of files.
Apart from anything else,Proton already has far too many half developed apps. Like thousands of others have commented, I wish they'd just finish the apps they've started, not add new ones.

I don't need a dedicated photos app, but doing this would fix my biggest problem with PD, which is that I cannot access my photos from my Windows PD client. I'm open to other ways of addressing that, but this would work, as well.

But save the photos in the drive, link it to the photo app and only use the photo app to show/edit/delete the photo file. It makes no sense to me having to places for saving photo files.

I also prefer a dedicated Photos app! It’s far more effective to have apps that do one thing very well than a compromised app that does a bit of everything.

I don't see the need for this. In fact, won't this make moving photos between "photos" and "my files" more clunky (when that feature inevitably arrives".
