Make Photos a unified view of all image files stored in Proton Drive
I would like Proton Photos to automatically detect and display all supported image and video files stored anywhere in Proton Drive, rather than treating Photos as a separate storage area.
At the moment, if I store photographs inside a normal Drive folder — for example a family archive, project folder, scanned-photo collection, or other structured folder — those images do not automatically appear in the Photos timeline. This means users effectively have to choose between keeping photos in a meaningful folder structure in Drive or importing them separately into Photos.
I would prefer Photos to work primarily as a view layer on top of Proton Drive.
In practice:
- All photos and videos should remain stored in their normal Drive folders.
- The Photos tab should automatically index supported media files across Drive.
- The main Photos view should present those files chronologically using their metadata.
- Albums should act as an additional organisational layer without creating duplicate copies.
- Moving a photo between Drive folders should not remove it from the Photos timeline.
- A photo should only need to exist once in Proton Drive, regardless of whether it is accessed through Files, Photos, or Albums.
For example, I might have:
Family Archive → Grandparents → Scanned photos
Those files should remain in that archival folder structure, while also automatically appearing in the Photos timeline alongside my phone and camera photos.
One of Proton’s competitors, the Norwegian cloud service Jottacloud, already works in a similar way: photos stored across normal file storage can automatically appear in the photo timeline.
I think this would make Proton Drive much more coherent. Rather than Photos being a separate destination where media has to be imported, Photos could simply be a specialised chronological and visual view of media already stored in Drive.
This would also reduce unnecessary duplication, make migrations easier, and allow users to maintain proper archival folder structures without giving up the convenience of a photo timeline.
If Proton wants Drive to become a full replacement for services such as Google Drive and Google Photos, I think this would be a very valuable architectural improvement.
