Enable Lumo to Integrate with iOS MCP Mode for Voice Assistant Capabilities
In the recently released developer beta of iOS 26.1, references were discovered in the system files indicating that Apple is preparing support for MCP (Model Context Protocol). While Apple has not officially announced this feature yet, these findings strongly suggest that MCP integration is coming soon.
This presents an exciting opportunity for Proton to make Lumo more powerful and accessible by enabling it to function as a third-party AI voice assistant within iOS. Users could directly invoke Lumo at the system level, similar to Siri, but with Proton’s strong emphasis on privacy and security.
Why this matters:
- Privacy-first alternative: Current mainstream voice assistants often rely on invasive data collection. Lumo, aligned with Proton’s mission, could become the first truly privacy-respecting voice assistant on iOS.
- User control: Proton can ensure audio inputs and contextual queries remain encrypted and are never exploited for advertising or profiling.
- Security advantage: MCP offers a structured way to integrate assistants at the OS level. Proton could leverage this while ensuring that sensitive data is handled only within Proton’s secure environment.
- Future-proof innovation: Early adoption would give Proton a first-mover advantage, being among the first services to bring a privacy-focused AI assistant into Apple’s ecosystem.
- Hands-free productivity: Beyond privacy, this integration would make using Lumo more natural and accessible—ideal for multitasking, accessibility, or quick in-the-moment requests.
By building towards MCP integration now, Proton could be ready when Apple officially enables the feature, ensuring its users have access to a secure, privacy-preserving AI assistant that stands apart from mainstream alternatives.
