Remove dependance on google play services
Protonmail android app is dependent on google play services and that is obviously against privacy and security.
Users who removed/disable google play services or used vanilla "lineageos" without gapps cannot get the mail client work properly.
Google play services collect every possible piece of info about the user; location, body sensors, application usage, and every other possible thing. So telling the use to enable/install google services you compromise his privacy and security by 3rd party app which is clearly against the idea if Protomail.
I hope you can correct this and have no dependence on google at all.

I see this is marked as plan. Can we get some more insight on this?

Better still, run your own F-droid repo for Protonmail.

Yes, please do this! I do not use the Google App Store. I tried side loading the Protonmail app and it wont open any mail. Keeps telling me to install the Play Store.... NO!

Having g-apps free AOSP phone, what do I wish more ? Of course, the ProtonMail Android app in the F-Droid store ! And Google Services-free !!!

Please make the protonmail app available on the F-droid alternative market. Many corporation mobile devices do not have the Playstore installed. Others may not want GApps on the devices and prefer open source alternatives like F-Droid. Either case, Protonmail's growing user base would benefit from another alternative repository other than the Playstore.

If it wasn't about getting push notifications, why not using the web app?

This is really hillarious. You cant say that you are against data surveilance and want to protect the privacy of your users and the force them to use services such as google play.

If Google Services is indeed required to run Protonmail on Android, then it has to be fixed.

If you don't have the financial resources to address this issue, feel free to create a donation/subscription campaign for this purpose. I am sure that in less than a week you will raise the money.

@Jasper Weiss
Would it be possible for them to make a repository that users can add to Fdroid? I'm pretty sure the main Fdroid repo requires apps to be GPL licensed. -

Would that translate into a Google-free life in a Jolla?

Protonmail should work without Google services installed. I use a Blackphone, that is Google free, because I don't trust Google.
