Proton Maps
A web and mobile maps-like application based on the free OpenStreetMap data. The app allows to privately search for locations, save favorite locations, get directions, and possibly share the users' location for a limited time with other Proton users. Moreover, users can create custom maps with custom paths or GPS points.

OpenStreetMap is open, use this.
Why want to create new one of this? Proton is very good enterprise, but they can't do all anything.
If have a good existing alternative to GAFAM, don't need to create. -

With Google renaming the Gulf of Mexico, this is becoming important.

Partnering with (or providing an overlay for) one of the privacy focussed mapping/navigation apps (such as those mentioned in an upcoming update to privacyguides.net as seen here: https://pr2827.unreviewed.privacyguides.dev/en/maps/) might be a quicker and easier solution to this request, as creating a new mapping/navigation app is a huge undertaking, especially when Proton has many other priorities. Great idea though!

I second this! For now, try downloading Organic Maps. It works fine but isn't as nice as Google features-wise. Proton Maps all the way!

Help us de-google ourselves.
Maps has been the only google service I’ve used for a long time.
I’ve looked for a decent alternative to help me with directions from A to B but there are very few good options.
Help us de-google by letting us not have to give google our physical location anymore. -

I think that this is the single most important thing Proton could do with their resources right now. There are other maps services based on Open Street Map such as Osmand~ and Organic Maps, but if Proton were to add reviews for businesses as well as keep it updated better, it would be totally game changing.

Proton Maps would be incredible if they also allow for rating and reviewing businesses. If it's kept on top of as well as Google Maps is, it has the potential to be the biggest competitor to both Google and Apple maps. I'm a big fan of this idea and I think it's almost a necessity to have on the roadmap! (No pun intended :p)

WE NEED PROTON MAPS!! just make OSM but with a good interface so i can ditch Gmaps and make it easy to suggest edits that could atomaticly apply to the user suggesting it but would need to be approved for others to see it as well. That way the community can help it be better!!

It would be great if Proton develops a map app based on OpenStreetMap data. The app should have a minimalist design like Apple Maps, with usable public transport data like Google Maps.

Would love this. I'm currently a contributor to Google Maps from the editing feature, and I add missing roads and update the map as often as I can. Would love for Proton to make a maps application, with an editing feature, where anyone edit the map.

I'd really like a good real-time traffic info like in Waze.

a good private map app with usefull public transport data would be awesome. I mostly use apple maps, because all other alternatives that are more privacy respecitng are terrible at providing public transport data, at least in germany (and I don't even live in a small city). but maybe I want to switch to GOS or another privacy respecting mobile OS in the future, and I honestly haven't found a good alternative
