Linux supported equally
Linux is very popular among privacy concerned users, who make up a large chunk of Proton's userbase. However, Proton fails to provide any solid Linux apps and frequently leaves them unmaintained or released years after the initial product launch. Proton should make Linux a first-class platform, with proper support from day one.

The situation is really bad on Linux, plus this year Linux is growing a lot.

I recently installed Linux Mint. I did it for the exact reason why I am a Proton (Unlimited) user: Digital Sovereignty and promoting European tech.
I truly hope for a Proton Drive App on Linux.

Title: From Better Support to a Sovereign OS: Why a "Proton Linux" Beta is the Next Logical Step
Comment:
First, kudos to the team for the existing Linux support—it's a solid foundation. But to truly lead, Proton needs to go further than just porting apps. The next logical step is a Proton Linux Beta, built on stable bases like Ubuntu or Mint.
Why Now? The stars are aligned. The EU has committed €30+ billion to digital sovereignty to break free from US Big Tech, and the Linux desktop community in Europe just exploded with 15–20 million new users in a single year. These users aren't just looking for an OS; they are desperate for a trustworthy, privacy-native ecosystem.
The Proposal Instead of reinventing the wheel, launch a public beta. It's low-risk, leverages existing infrastructure, and turns users into co-developers. It proves that Proton can deliver on its core promise: Privacy First, built into the foundation—not bolted on as an afterthought.
Conclusion Don't just patch expensive Windows dependence. Privacy and data-hungry Windows are fundamentally incompatible—Windows lost 5.1% market share in Europe between late 2025 and mid-2026, shedding roughly 15 million users as people seek alternatives. Offer the real exit door. Start with a Proton Linux Beta featuring integrated VPN first (or more :). With this focused approach, Proton can choose to stay comfortable or lead the change—delivering security and privacy that is native from the very first boot.

What people forget is that Linux encompasses multiple operating systems, packages and libraries, whereas the other platforms are only one each, hence it takes longer to put out a general release for Linux, and would only make sense to get the easier developments out of the way first so they can focus on the Linux developments. This is the disadvantage the fracturing with Linux has given. This on top of all the other development projects they have and making sure they maintain a strong standard on encryption and privacy on top of all of that. I agree Linux users probably make up the majority of privacy advocates using Proton, but people are forgetting the logistical factor here. I've been using Mail and Pass on Ubuntu and Fedora and they've frequently released updated packages on their site, so it has at least picked up in the past couple years on that end of things.

I'm in the process of transitioning to Linux. I was pretty disappointed to see that Proton doesn't support Linux yet for all of its services.
I'll have to consider whether I'll wait for the Linux apps to be implemented or to move my business subscription to a different provider.

I have been on Family Plan for 2 years now, I would really like to stop seeing "There is a new version available" when there is not for Linux. I really support this :)

Recently moved my business and family to proton. I'm hoping that full Linux support is coming soon as it would make things a bit easier. Add my voice full Linux support. :)

I need that piece to switch from Windows to Linux. I have the distro and all but the hassle to manually sync my files does not encourage me to do the switch...

I totally agree mostly about Proton Drive. Without a Drive it is difficult to use professionally.

It would be nice to have a general Proton PPA/repo, like there already is for VPN. Updating Mail+Pass manually is quite the hassle...

Strongly agree.
This is not just 'fringe' - Linux is used widely in business.
Cannot / will not move to Proton's business offerings until Linux (esp Drive) is adequately supported. -

filen.io does not support symbolic links - it's useless as a Linux cloud sync destination.

I agree, I've been using Linux for several years now, before that I was on Windows. Proton software is poorly supported on Linux. I am currently a PikaOS user, previously I was on CachyOS, Pop!_OS, Fedora, Linux Mint.

No choice but to quit the Microsoft ecosystem with end of 10, but Proton is lagging in Linux support! Kind of puts us in a tough spot!
