This is a fundamental feature for business users. Emails contain documents passed back and forth, usually with notes about what was changed and the associated attachment containing a version number, Many of these are passed back and forth through the days these are written. Only the metadata for the attachment and email content needs to be retained in the email folder. The attachments are saved by the user and updated.

Metadata should contain the file name and the storage location on the users system (folder) along with the date/time detached from the email. Optionally - as some business email systems provide - Proton mail could keep an attachment folder archive and store the detached attachments in that archive, giving the user a link in the email to provide and alternate path to access the document in that detached attachments archive.
