    You have left! (?) (thinking…)
How important is this to you?

An app would be okay. I'd far rather have a reliable and regularly tested CardDAV server (which works with default Apple Contacts and default Android contact app).

Something must be done, as there's no way to securely and privately sync contacts with almost anything now. Contact sync is a huge hole in the Proton services.

It's absolute madness that Proton does not have a solution for syncing contacts between address book and telephone. I mainly pay for the VPN which still has some value for me, even if I prefer Windscribe these days, but no address book sync (preference C
CardDAV actually tested to work with Macs and iPhones) is a reason to drop all Proton services. Or on the contrary to start to use the email services and really commit to Proton.

PS. I've tried Fruux (calendars work, contacts don't) NextCloud and etesync and the others and they all have their issues, currently don't have working sync. Mainly the issues are on Apple's side but it's up to the provider to work around them. Proton could get a lot of points by doing this.
