Feedback on the Usage Restriction of the Desktop App for Free Users
I find it somewhat contradictory that Proton Mail and Proton Calendar can be used without issue by free users on smartphones, while access via the desktop app requires a paid subscription. This feels like an unnecessary and artificial restriction, especially for users who primarily work on computers.
Personally, even if I upgraded to Proton Mail Plus, I’d prefer using the Proton Mail Bridge to connect my mailbox with a mail client like Thunderbird or Outlook—so the desktop app wouldn’t be a deciding factor for me. The current limitation comes across more as a deterrent than an incentive to switch.
In my view, a fairer and more consistent model—where basic features are equally available to free users across all platforms (web browser, mobile app, and desktop app)—would create significantly more trust and, long-term, increase willingness to subscribe to a paid plan.
