I found the Proton feature, "Confirm Link URLs".

That is not a good substitute to being able to see the URL before clicking.

The goal here is to consistently avoid the barrage of phishing URLs. By showing the URL only after clicking, you train people that they NEED to click on links, even if they suspect them to be phishing, to even find out if they were phishing links.

So everyone's security now relies on whether that setting is checked, on that day, for that device, via that app.

Any settings mishap that results in that checkbox changing state, results in that person starting to instantly follow links without knowing that would happen.

Whereas a simple tooltip on hover does not require interacting with the link to verify the link.

It's also how employees are trained to verify links at work. Having your email application verify differently will muddy that training, because at work they check for display on hover, but at home they click.

People are trying to tell you how important this is. Please listen!

I just began evaluating a full migration from GMail to Proton. For me, this one issue by itself means the desktop app is unusable and I will only use web access.
