IMAP/SMTP + TLS support
Multi support are needed for heavy mail client (Outlook/Thunderbird/Evolution etc...)
Web access only is too limited

The ProtonMail Bridge supports IMAP/SMTP support for desktop clients: https://protonmail.com/blog/thunderbird-outlook-encrypted-email/

Hey Proton Mail, we are past the mid 2017 point and still waiting for a way to integrate it into Outlook or Thunderbird. Please post a specific answer to this with actual time frames. I can appreciate the difficulty of maintaining security and integrity in the process. I am sure that if you do devise a way to do this, you would maintain those of your current users who are on the fence and gain many new users as well.

As far as I know these domain doesn't belong to protonmail, so, I'm don't think that it's a good idea to use it.
Besides, for this functionality (IMAP) if I can recall there is the development of Bridge (right now I can't provide a link, but in the blog of ProtonMail you can search about it) and so far I guess that is the only official solution/way to get IMAP-like functionality.

It is now after mid 2017. Progress? I see this: http://prontomail.com/imap.html but it doesn't tell me what to do with the enigmail keys.

Good Day, Protonmail Team:
Could you give us an update on the progress of the IMAP/SMTP support, as we're now past midyear?
Thank you!

I've voted and would like to see this available for Linux as I used Thunderbird with existing PGP contacts. Also, would be nice to see on Android (K-9) for the same reason, but I can manage without PGP here and just use the Android client.

I will be cancelling my paid licence if there isn't any update on this. It is quite disapointing to see that the support refuses to reply in this thread and also refused so many people to be betatesters. We are in Q3 which is well after your promised update/release
This is an essential feature so stop ignoring your customers and give us an update.

As soon as there is support for IMAP/SMTP (and some sort of transport encryption, of course), I will upgrade to
a paid account (and then use my own domain).
Thank you!

Dear Protonmail team, could you specify how do you plan to enable such support? Are there going to be targeted plug-ins/extensions for every client to encrypt/decrypt a message before sending/receiving data from a server over standard IMAP/SMTP protocols? Or are you planning on building a daemon which would work on localhost as an intermediate mail proxy (same as antivirus software does on Windows or something like stunnel on a GNU/Linux)? Did you think about a ProtonmailFS which would grant access to mail through a Maildir-like structure using FUSE? This could be quite easy to implement with e.g. Python3, asyncio and some cryptography. It would ease integration with clients supporting Maildir - mutt for example (which I personally use).

Is the full release with IMAP support still on for mid-2017?

Just so I'm clear, ProtonMail is saying they are working on IMAP and SMTP. ProtonMail has done everything so far to implement features without affecting security and people in this forum, who have little-to-no insider information, say ProtonMail can't do it without removing, or at least compromising, their security. Does that about cover it? Yes, I understand how IMAP and SMTP work, so don't start down that road. What I want to know is, on what information are you basing your statement that it either can't be done or they will need to "keep ProtonMail separate" in order to maintain security? Seriously, take your time and give me some details. Jimmy? Joel? Give us the scoop.

I honestly love the mobile app tho, for my purposes it's good. IMAP/SMTP would be nice I guess but I hate Apple's native Mail app.

I asked very nicely and kindly if I could be part of the IMAP beta, seeing as I'm an early user + customer + beta tester of ProtonMail and actually require some form of IMAP access due to changes in my work pattern. My request was rather bluntly rejected.
Pretty disappointed about that, both on the call itself and on form, to be honest.

I second that: is there a way to sign up for the Beta? I'd be happy to help!

Would love to sign up for Beta if available!

Can ProtonMail give us a date for the imap/smtp function.
We're a lot here to wait for that before to join ProtonMail solutions
thanks for reply -

I very much support the implementation of IMAP functionality. The lack of ability to use an offline email program is so far a big deal breaker to upgrade to a premium account.
