You guys need to buy the proton.com domain to be honest. Can we at least get proton.co.uk or proton.eu? proton.net? proton.mail? I don't use the pm or me either.

FWIW, I used to receive spam from gmail.com on a regular basis before switching to Proton Mail.

Proton should just buy 'gmail.com' and use that! Think of the brand recognition!

Let's remove everything I don't use on the internet because I have opinion based on my own liking and experience.

I agree that if it were proton.com (which is unavailable and they tried to get it) or p.com, that would be great. But there's no need to say 'this would be better.' It can't be better, because this isn't about the devs not wanting it. If you think 'this would be cool,' then go get the domain for Proton yourself and donate it. Everyone will say thanks.

And the fact that pm.me isn't available to everyone and isn't recognizable is fine. What's the alternative, handing it out to every scammer so ProtonMail ends up on blocklists of tons of services and even entire countries? By the way, I can't even register a ProtonMail address with Chime bank, because they think scammers use an 'anonymous service.' And that's logical. In the past, people using Proton sent bomb threats and emails to schools and malls. As a result, many just added a service that refused to disclose user data to their blocklists.

So decide for yourself: do you want secure communication, or do you want service recognition?

This is a non issue as there is already choice in ending top level domain for user account types, even for free accounts. People can just choose protonmail.com and be done with it. This request should be declined.

This is a real friction. @pm.me throws people off. It's also awkward in certain languages where "Me" is not a word or means something entirely different. Then the abbreviation gets awkward when shared out loud with non-English speakers. When I travel to countries where I don't speak the language, if I say "myname@gmail.com" everyone understands me. Yet, I would have to look up how to say "P," "M," "dot," "E" in the local language if I don't speak it.

Clearly, we want to eventually use @proton.com as an option. It would be fantastic.

But having a language-barrier-proof one with a very global root would be great too, for example:
- @intermail.com
- @neomail.com
- @safemail.com
- @plusmail.com (fitting since protons have a positive charge)
- @cryptomail.com
- @promail.com
- @tecmail.com (from Latin 'tectus' = "covered/hidden")

One thing I haven't see mentioned on this thread is that buying your own domain is fundamentally different than hiding among the group of users on protonmail.com/pm.me. There is less anonymity, which is a real concern for some people.

So, here's an alternative idea ;)

How about Proton allows anyone to donate domains, which can then be used by everyone on the Proton service.

The people who want pmail.com can try to get it from Pegasus Mail, which has used the domain for 28 years.

promail.com (29 years registered), protmail.com (1 year registered), protomail.com (13 years registered), proton.com (31 years registered) can all be acquired by the people who like those domains.

The people who want proton.de because they are in Europe can donate that domain. The people who want proton.br because they are in Latin America can donate that domain. The people who want proton.ng because they are in Africa can donate that domain.

Of course the domains cost money annually to register, and Proton can't just stop supporting them... so perhaps each donated domain can be accompanied by (I know my math here is bad) 20x the annual registration fee as a perpetuity investment with an annual dividend to pay the registration.

So proton.de can be donated for the low cost of $200, which (if my bad math were right) would allow for indefinite payment of the domain registration cost.

Finally it does take some time to manage these domains... maybe 5 hours per year is an uneducated guess if working at scale. So add that to the donation at a reasonable hourly rate for full-time tech labor, eg $100 x 5 = $500 x 20 = $10,000.

So I propose:

For the low price of $10,200-$10,600, anyone can donate a domain to Proton which will fit their exact needs and can be used by the community as a whole.

Or, as is already possible, anyone can bring their own domain for free or enjoy anonymity among the community on the short list of Proton's own domains that are not currently in use by other companies ;)

I have a 20 year background in enterprise internet security to include email and spam filtering, etc. If that is the conversation you envision my only suggestion would be the typical support one... Please step away from the keyboard. If this truly is a problem then you probably should not be doing what ever it is you are doing.

I hate to break it to you but Gmail is undoubtedly the largest and most well known purveyor of spam, which includes scams, phishing, etc...
Furthermore, users that think they should only trust "Gmail" email addresses are the exact users that will click on the phishing links and submit their personal info.

I agree with the concerns about @pm.me. While shorter addresses are convenient, they reduce trust and increase the risk of being flagged as spam. A better approach would be offering shortened Proton addresses with a more recognizable domain like @proton.com or a country-specific TLD (.de, .pl, .si). This would preserve legitimacy, make spelling easier in conversation, and maintain brand recognition, all without compromising on convenience.

Agree and added as a wish some days ago, that proton should offer pmail.com.

It's close to gmail, so people are kind of familiar with the concept already and it's far simpler to say 'no with a p instead of a g' if people misunderstand it for gmail.com than trying to get people to understand proton.me or spell "pe em dot em e", which is phonetically super confusing and also doesn't add up to something that makes intuitive sense for the recipient.

Disagree and am shocked at the number of upvotes. I don’t understand signing up for an email service where it’s completely transparent what the available addresses are and then complaining about the available addresses. Is the original poster sending unsolicited marketing or sales emails to people he doesn’t know? I don’t understand the fear of being labeled as spam if you’re not using spammy language in your mails. (If he’s running a business, he should use a proper custom domain name, anyway.) @pm.me is a short and memorable email.

This isn’t even an FR or any other request. It’s already possible by the user getting a domain name.

The fact that comments in here saying people have had to get a gmail address as it sounds more familiar is as telling as it is damning.

The feedback I get from mail recipients is exactly the opposite!

Many people tell me what a "cool" email address I have (********@pm.me), and ask how they can get the same for themselves. They like it because it is as short as possible to type. Also they think of the "pm" part as standing for "personal message". So in effect my email address is telling them to "personal message me". Many people think this is really great! :-)

When I first signed up for Proton E-mail service, I _declined_ to activate the @pm.me address.

The "proton.me" E-mail domain was already raising many eyebrows - and not in a good way - with some of the E-mail administrators that I still talk with. E-mails from "proton.me" are routinely blocked by many _corporate_ E-mail systems that are using Microsoft Exchange. Even at my (former) employer, I have to call people and ask them to look for an E-mail from me in their SPAM folder if I am expecting a reply.

Now, it seems, in their infinite wisdom, Proton has chosen to activate this address automatically? Seriously? So much for leaving the USER in control of what hapens with E-mail addresses.

I agree with the comments of the original poster, and for those that haven't had issues - count yourselves lucky.

@Proton.Email would be a nice option to have. Also @Proton.CH
