For Android FairEmail is a good client. Thunderbird is good. Although I'm not sure you can use Proton via third party apps? On desktop you will need a bridge which is, as far as I know, only available in paid plans, so you would have to use official ProtonMail app.
Please don't go back do gmail. Check other private providers if you have to. I've heard there are some in Germany.
