It's my understanding is that the proton mail app is an Electron wrapper around the website. If this is the case, you can install Proton Mail as a web-app in most Chromium-based browsers.

You could also add support for a ProtonVPN for different inits (dinit, runit, OpenRC).

Electron is better than nothing. Please consider Flatpak or Snap.

the Desktop App for Windows and MacOS seems do be based on Cromium, thus it should be easy to port it for linux. In the meantime you can use it via wine.

Since Proton Bridge is supposed to tamper the emails content ( https://github.com/ProtonMail/proton-bridge/issues/26 ) and makes Thunderbird to use a lot of local disk space when using labels, I believe a ProtonMail app for Linux is extremely needed.

Linux in Proton needs equality with other major supported OS's. This also includes DE's as wlll, not just Gnome (like the current VPN app for linux).
@Alvan Rahimil, Bridge made a complete mess of my Fastmail to Proton conversion. It also loads into memory on every boot and has no instructions on how to completely remove it from Linux. Fortunately I found it on Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtonMail/comments/kpvu94/uninstall_bridge/
@Tory, I am not in favour of an Electron, AppImage or Snap app. Too many Linux incompatibilities (like AppImage does not launching at all with older kernels unless you heavily compromise the image security).
@jamail +1 for non-systemd support

Already developing an Desktop App for Windows and MacOS, it seems that it would be fair to port this App for Linux.
Another idea would be to develop an App reasled based on their WebApp combined with Electron. An good example here would be Teams for Linux. -

I think as this feature has workaround (using Proton Bridge) we can just use whatever client we want (Thunderbird, Betterbird, Mailspring, Geary, and etc). By doing this, we can let them allocate resources to more critical features.

Could you add a support for an OpenRC init and others (not only a systemd).

Exhausted of seeing Ubuntu (linux) ignored by all companies with the hope this would be different, at least, from service providers like Proton. I changed from gmail to proton expecting from this company an alternative mindset, besides of having more privacy
