A Proper ProtonVPN Linux Client With GUI
I would love to see a proper ProtonVPN Linux Client with GUI that looks similar to the Windows version and with the same features. The current Linux client does not look good and it's too much and not plain and simple like with the Windows version. Is there anyone else that are not happy with the current client and want a better one?

Mar 8, 2024, and now Aug 2025, and I really want to be able to ditch Windows 10. I did briefly try a Linux dist, but jezus, I can't work with Proton VPN on that - there should be some organisational policy at Proton about maintaining product function & presentation consistency between platform releases.

I don't mind a more spartan interface, but Profiles and Split Tunnelling are definite omissions of functionality in the present Linux app.

I am a paid Proton user and would love to see more support for Linux.

For Linux, it really, really needs split tunning in the GUI. I rather not mess with openvpn or what ever it is.

Also for the ARM version of Debian Linux.

Real Proton Lover here!
But i totally agree, also fedora/cinnamon -> a real pain to work with Proton VPN here.
Would've already gone Proton Unlimited if it weren't for missing support here... -

More than GUI, I would hope they add the same features that we had in Windows.
Split tunneling and reverse split tunneling. Split tunneling by programs.

FWIW I'm quite happy with proton-vpn-gtk-app-4.3.0 on Ubuntu 22.04. It integrates well with the GNOME desktop. Improvements and feature parity would be great, I just think some comments here are overstated.

Since my june 4 comment, I've abandoned Ubuntu for bookworm, the much improved raspberry pi OS. While bookworm's UI lacks the elegance of Ubuntu's UI, it makes up for it in stability and fewer bugs. Also, the current proton VPN app for Linux is working great with bookworm and my pi 4.

Using protonvpn 4.1.0 on nobara currently and only have a few gripes. I would like to be able to select servers to not auto-connect to, "blacklist." And i would like to see the services available in the server im currently connected to ie. streams or p2p.

Have an official Flatpak with the GUI. I could be wrong, but having the VPN installed on the OS makes the browser extensions redundant. Wouldn't that free up developers to focus on other things?

I'd like to add that I would love to see the dependency on NetworkManager be removed. I haven't used NetworkManager in a long time, preferring systemd-networkd and systemd-resolved. Because of the dependency on NetworkManager, I can't use existing proton applications and my only option is to use wireguard.

Absolutely. It lacks many features the Mullvad APP or ProtonVPN for Linux app have.
Also, I can't understand why they would go with Python for the Linux app. It is less reliable and less efficient.

After using the current Windows/Mac version of ProtonVPN app, the Linux version looks like a very early pre-alpha build that was lost in time... I hope ProtonVPN team dedicate more time to re-write the app, to make it like the other OS's versions.

Totally agree, Proton VPN for Linux should be totally re-built to provide the same UI, experience, features and settings present in Windows and Mac verstions, which are fantastic.

I've started using Proton VPN in Windows, and it's a great app, full of resources, with great graphics, many resources, ability to auto-start, start minimized, auto-connect to a profile... The Mac version also looks very similar to Windows'.
However, recently I changed to Linux (Pop OS, Ubuntu based), and although I had no problems installing the GUI version of the app, it does not even remotely resemble the Windows/Mac version. It's a very, veeeeeeeeery simple app, without the majority of configuration options present in their other OS's counterparts.
Proton VPN team should dedicate more time to make the Linux version of the app the same that we see in Windows/Mac, so we can have in Linux exactly the same wonderful experience the app propitiates in Windows and Mac.

I prefer the Linux client GUI; however, it doesn't play nice with Ubuntu 23.04 LTS desktop on the Raspberry Pi 4. Proton VPN does work flawlessly with the OS's native OpenVPN and Proton's configuration files, but you lose the GUI's bells and whistles. In fact, some of those bells and whistles (which are command lines in disguise) cause the OS instability and connectivity issues I repeatedly experienced in spite of supposed fixes and workarounds. So I'd welcome a properly functioning Debian-based Linux client on Pi 4 hardware.

The current UI is unstable and looks bad. We need a modernization of UI and more features.
