Sync existing macOS folders
I miss the option to sync a folder that is not the default Proton Drive location in macOS. I think this is available in the Windows app.
Right now if I want to sync files with Proton Drive I need to copy them to the Proton Drive location in Finder.

I am still in the "30-day money-back" phase and have already integrated Proton 'unlimited' quite well into my processes.
However, I must also say that there are still a few rough edges that tip the scales for me.
In particular, 'drive' is still missing several features that are standard among its competitors.
I will think carefully about whether I will rely entirely on Proton...

You can do this the dumb/hacky way by setting up a crontab to rsync the folders.
Proton Drive is mounted under /Users/[your user name]/Library/CloudStorage/
You just need to give terminal and /usr/sbin/cron 'full disk access' in System Settings -> Privacy and Security.
* * * * * rsync -arW --del /Users/[your user name]/Desktop/ /Users/[your user name]/Library/CloudStorage/ProtonDrive-[your proton user name]@proton.me-folder/Desktop/ 2>&1 > /dev/null

I spent the entire last weekend downloading files from other cloud services to my machine, and deduping, with the intention of syncing it to Proton Drive, but after spinning my wheels for an additional 5 days trying to troubleshoot why I cannot choose folders to sync, I found this this. I am beyond angry. I am livid. OUTRAGED.
IHow is it that Proton is a decade behind on this critical feature?
And where is Proton's presence on this matter? Nowhere to be found, and they obviously do not keep their promises to users (i.e. scheduled for release OVER TWO YEARS AGO)
I now must find and pay for yet another cloud service, and go through the whole process AGAIN. No thanks to Proton and their lacking online resources, I lost nearly a week of my free time, wasted on THIS.
This is the straw that broke the camel's back as there are better, more secure solutions for everything Proton offers. You lost me as a customer over this very basic feature, and it's evident that Proton does not care.

Lack of real time synching is a critical gap that is preventing many to fully rely on Proton Drive. The fact that you have rolled it out for Windows users and don't hold Mac users in the same level of esteem is quite disturbing. It continues to show a lack of commitment by Proton to the worldwide Mac community. Please forgive my "enthusiastic" response -- but as Mac user and Proton subscriber for many, many years, I have seen this "favorite child" problem over and over again. I respectfully suggest that you resource your mac app development team and ensure real-time coordination between them to ensure all releases of functionality are syned for all of your users. Thank you.

This is definitely a critical need to be able to sync folders of one's choosing between proton and Mac. I really can't believe this app has existed this long without this feature.

I've also downloaded the Drive app and can't really see the point of using it without the folder sync, it's on the Windows app, so why not for the Mac OS?

Hello Proton team,
Any news/schedule about this feature ? It is quite frustrating having different sync client behaviour on different devices. I've just tried this feature (beta) in another provider offer, and it works quiet well. Hope you'll do the same shortly.
Thank you.

This is what is preventing me from recommending my friends and family move over from other solutions like Tresorit.

Just installed the macOS native application, only to find out that I can't sync custom folders (computers tab on the web app). I already use this feature on Windows, so I assumed this would also work on macOS, but it's not. This is really bad!

Any update on when this is coming? A serious miss for Mac users (like me)!

Hi, you can use Terminal to have a folder that “syncs” to one of your other folders. You can create this folder inside the Proton Drive location.
This is coming in the new Proton Drive for macOS app. -

Wow this is unbelievable bad. Not just terrible software, but worse they give you the impression on their website that this is how it works. I could swear I read that someone on marketing sites. Feels scummy and dishonest.

When I booked the subscription, I assumed that I would be able to sync my user folder. Finally a clean backup in Switzerland.
If I've understood correctly, it only seems to work on Windows. Very disappointing!
And... November 2023 planned: Will that still be a thing? -

This will be pretty much be the only way to guarantee a backup of you local files to other destinations than Proton Drive.

This says 'Planned . NOV 30, 2023' which was a year and a half ago. Wish it could get some priority because Proton Drive is a no-go without this feature.

Hello,
Just joined the Proton community. System folders sync is a game changer and would definitly trigger my whole migration to Proton. -

This is long overdue. Sync on demand from Proton Drive to Mac is a little janky. Even clicking download now which is supposed to keep files downloaded often fails. We really need Mac to Proton Drive sync for a solid back up option and the ability to select destinations.
