Must-have features to stay competitive
I’ve been a long-time Google One user, not because I particularly love it, but because I’m forced to be. Every time I try to leave the Google ecosystem for new alternatives, I end up crawling back within an hour because there are just too many missing features.
I tried Proton Drive Premium, but unfortunately, it’s missing way too functionality and I’ve run into few issues, mostly with photo management.
For example:
- In Photos, you can’t edit the date and time metadata. (This is important when you upload pictures sent to you from Whatsapp, emails and much more, where the datetime shown is the time of the picture being saved to your device. I want to be able to edit it to the time the picture was taken)
- In Photos, you can’t sort albums alphabetically or by any other criteria.
- In Photos, there’s no search bar to quickly find your albums. I imported around 25,000 photos from Google Photos split across more than 100 albums, and having to scroll manually to find the right one - especially without proper sorting - is really frustrating.
- In Photos, I’d like to see which albums a photo belongs to by clicking on the image, just like you can in Google Photos.
- In Photos, I’d like to be able to move photos to the trash directly from an album. Right now, only a "Remove from album" option appears.
- In Photos, you can't select multiple albums and delete them all together.
- In the mobile app, the Photos section loads very slowly. As I scroll down, I just see blank gray boxes for several seconds. I understand the data is end-to-end encrypted, but this makes it almost unusable.
- In Files, you can’t customize folder icon colors.
These features are all currently available in Google Photos. I can't wait to ditch Google and american big techs, but unfortunately I won't be able to until I find an alternative that offers the same core functionality.
The only thing Proton Drive has and Google Photos don't (please don't remove it) is that I can see dates as I scroll down an album. By scrolling album in Google Photo you have no idea what time the picture was taken until you open it and read the details.
Hope this helps Proton grow.
