Basic plan
A 'basic' price plan between 'free' and 'plus', that is a lot cheaper than the $/€4 per month 'plus' plan. The price covers the running costs of a 'free' account, and should provide less of a shock to the system of cash-strapped people used to free (albeit not private) email.
The added features over the 'free' plan would be Protonmail Bridge, so emails & attachments can be downloaded, as the 500MB capacity fills very fast even with just standard usage, and the option to remove the signature "Sent with ProtonMail Secure Email" (default setting would be signature included). I would personally be happy to keep the signature to help spread the word about Protonmail.

I feel a bit guilty using protonmail for free. But I am a retired individual, not a business, and don't need 5GB, 1000 messages a day, and 200 folders, for example. I would be happy with 150 mesages per day, 2 GB storage, and maybe 10 folders. I can think of a couple other things that would be nice, such as an autodelete, which I'd value more than an autoresponder. I can envision a price of perhaps $20 per year. I think there are others in my category.

Really love protonmail. I very much love to use a paid version. But as a student and as someone from a 3rd world country i find 5 euro per month too high a price. Why don't you guys introduce a basic plan with following features for 1 euro per month(or 10 euro per year).
*1 GB storage
*2/3 addresses
*50 labels/folders
*300 messages per day
*send and receive mail using @pm.me address.I think this will be a great plan for those who find protonmail intresting and too poor to subscribe plus plan, especially students.

5 GB limit for the lowest priced tier is too little nowadays. The minimum should be at least 25 GB.

I thought that a plan between free and plus would be nice.
Idea:
Storage: from 1 to 5 GB that you can choose.
Addresses: 2
pm.me address: yes
Messages per day: 150 (same as free)
Folders/Labels: 20?
Custom Domains: no
Email Filters: yes
Autoresponder: yesThis would be perfect for me.

The only feature not in Free which I want is access in Thunderbird. So add Basic version for say £2/month with the Bridge feature and ability to keep existing address when upgrading. Other features as the Free version.

I'd like to see something even lower (and more customization). Something that was identical to the free plan but started you out with 1 additional email address (as well as allow you to use your pm.me address for outgoing mail). You could add on more addresses, storage, etc for an additional cost. I love the subscription model vs having my data sold, but I don't want to worry about losing email addresses I may depend on if something happens that I couldn't afford the plus plan.
Edit: I see you basically said the same thing at the end of you post. :-D

I deeply agree with this idea. I think there is many of users who will go for it undoubtedly once it is priced 1-2 EUR/USD/CHF per month. 1GB Storage, Bridge Support will be very basic requirements for the users. In addition to that, current and potential users in developing and emerging countries will be able to afford it way better with no currency deficit.

I'm agree with you, and include the IMAP/POP support.

Considering the pricing of Tutanota, I will migrate my custom domains there when my existing plan with Protonmail plan expires.

A tier between 'Free' and 'Plus' would be really welcome for those of us on very low incomes. I'm a free user ATM but am currently looking at how I use my email to improve account security. However, I'm limited in options b/c of how much I can afford to pay.
So I'm either going to have to use multiple free accounts which is a pain & means I can't use the Bridge with Thunderbird. Or I'm going to have to use free insecure accounts like Outlook.
But, I'd be very happy (& could afford) to pay Proton €20 to €25 a year for:
- 1 user
- 2GB storage
- 5 Addresses
- 500 messages / day (or less)
- 100 Folders / labels
- No custom domainThis would be ideal for me.
Or you could do a sliding scale pricing where people can add functions for an additional fee: eg how much storage they need, how many addresses they need, etc. We could then create the service we can afford to pay for.

The free plan has sufficient features for me but i still would like to financially support Proton to keep it free of backdoors and advertisements in the future. Please make a plan identical to free but for €1 a month.

I absolutely agree. All I want is unlimited messages and POP3/IMAP access because I prefer Thunderbird for mail. ProtonMail doesn't offer calendars and tasks.

I agree. I find it also frustrating that there is no plan focused on personal use, like other privacy orientated providers do.
No need for custom domains or priority support. Just 10 GB of data so that all the free email users don´t feel cramped.
Ideally free alias emails and an option like POP3 to easily do a once of importof emails from other providers. -

I agree with you. A plan that costs € 1 / month, with 1-2 GB of storage and that increases the MB of attachments a bit could be great for many customers.

Add another paying plan between "FREE" and "PLUS", only one account, 1Gb storage and VPN protection.

Agree with you, an account which cost half of "PLUS" account price with :
- 1 e-mail address
- 5 Gb storage
- without custom domain
- 250 messages per day
- 25 labels
- support
- filter
- automatic answerIn my opinion FREE account may be not enough for an normal private use on the long term; PLUS can offer too much features for a normal private use and too expensive.

Average person, maybe?
Need POP to download emails to Thunderbird (Bridge, is for paid)
Less than 150 emails per month/Not day, actual about 20 for me.
500Mb storage since I use POP and delete from the server is more than enough 1-2GB would be best
Email filters (for spam I assume, so it should be free)
5 email addresses.I know that 48 Euros may not be much but it's alot for POP and 5 email addresses with maybe 1-2 GB storage.
You need an inbetween, call it the FreePLUs1Euro. At 1Euro per month for something basic as I need would have me but not as it is. If you where to also include simple to follow instructions on how to migrate from yahoo, google and others, I believe it would greatly increase you customer base and at 1Euro for basic a lot of users that come to the site would take the plunge.O' you could also add a discount structure for those with ProtonMail whom want to take up ProtonVPN
Time to look elsewhere.

I agree. "Basic" plan should also exist. Same as "Plus", but with only 2 custom addresses and no custom domain. I'd take that without hesitation if it was 214€ a year, but for 48€ a year and not having such basic capabilities as browser extension notifier, I just can't decide for it. It's very unfortunate because their mission of secure e-mail is on point. But it just lacks so much and it's quite expensive if you don't really need all those extras. I really just need more space and folders/labels than Free plan offers it.

I'm willing to pay for this service but I don't need all of the functionality of your lowest plan. Is there a way I could get a plan that would be $2 a month, give me unlimited directories/labels and maybe 1Gb of storage? No need for multiple addresses or domains, just need a little more flexibility but not as much as the $4 a month plan.
