I don't know why this isn't a common feature for just about everything. Aside from a few philosophical articles on 'mortality in the digital age', nobody's really trying to put this in the hands of users. Sure, family or an authority can notify a social network if someone dies, but it's weird not to be able to maintain it all yourself. Imagine a dissident blog that launches 'I am kidnapped. I have been gone over 7 days.' messages. ProtonMail has the chance to lead the industry and pioneer us away from the dark ages.

I have 'googled' for similar services, but have not been able to find a workable solution (IfIDie.org, deadman.io and deadmanswitch.net appear to be questionable/unreliable/unsecured). Forget gmail..!!

An 'acknowledge' or 'check-in' button in the left column (or on top menu bar) that appears if a user turns on the feature, would be the vehicle to allow the user to indicate that 'I am still alive'. Another possibility would be SMS reply.

A "Dead Man's Switch" allows users to be contacted automatically once per month (per week, per year etc) to confirm they are still alive. If (for whatever reason), the user does not reply and thus provide "proof of life," the "Dead Man's Switch is activated.

This involves sending one or more emails out to designated addresses with instructions. It's a sort simple will, but one triggered digitally instead of by a person.

Prontonmail's anonymity suits this type of feature well because hosting one's will on Gmail is akin to sky writing it over Langley, Virginia. LOL!

I think this is a good idea and would like to see this implemented as a feature of this service. My use case is to send certain contacts an email with instructions if something were to happen to me which would trigger if I don't log into my email after x amount of days. This could be implemented as emails in a draft folder that have a set of rules apply (e.g. delay delivery) except that the rule would be if no logon in x amount of days send this email.

With the ease of use of encryption by PM it would be a really secure feature to send important info to people who are not so keen on cyber security if for some reason something happens to me.

Will you allow for legacy contacts? That is, in event of the user's death or inability, the account can be taken over by whomever the user has previously selected? Perhaps after a period of non-use your system could notify these users that there has been no activity for a period of time and allow them full access to the account? Digital beneficiary.

Don't you think that it will be better to give the options to a notary, or write them in a testament instead of giving this option?

I say because the only way to make it work would be to set up a timer that counts the last time that you haven't logged in (let's say, one year for example), and then ship an email to the person with the data, but that can potentially be used against you.

I find good the idea to delete the account though, like with Telegram (for example after 6 months).

Allow the sending of an automatic email to a third person in case of death / inactivity (including ProtonMail team to ask to delete the account or other [TBD]) to access his account and/or provide instructions. Like on Gmail.

I would like to have an option to set a time period, after which my account will be deleted, if I do not login.

I believe, this is very useful feature, since I do not want anybody to be able to access my account in case of my death, for example.

It would be great if you added a post mortem email, that will be sent to a certain user in case of my death/dissapearing or something else

I pay for this service elsewhere, but am concerned at its security, seeds for my Bitcoin in particular. It's the one feature that would make me upgrade to a paid account. If no log in in 30 days, send an email asking to log in, then 15 days, then 7 before releasing the emails. Logging in resets the timer.

Can you provide a way to register a digital beneficiary? In other words, when I die my wife can access my account. Google Mail provides this already. If the account has been inactive for some period of time (that I set) it will allow the beneficiary to access the contents.

I understand there's a clear security risk, but for those of us who use this service for our personal email it would be useful to have others access it on our death. Thank you.

I know there is the "Dead Man's Switch" webservice, but I would rather have it implemented in Protonmail, as I then can be sure it's super safe because of the end-to-end encryption!

This will be really handy with all that cryptocurrencys around... In case you die, you could send your seeds or parts of them to your family so that they can get access to your funds, otherwise, they are just lost...

I would love to have this feature, too.
Protonmail is one of the very few online companys I trust and I would like to send for example the password for my BitCoin Accounts to my family in case I die... :)
