Knowing how to "turn computer on" and "force it off" being my skill level, I would very much appreciate guidance. My computer is, unfortunately only capable of OS X on Firefox. I found this place quite by luck, as a subscriber to proton mail. I'm wondering whether anyone can tell me, since I'm using Firefox, am I in any way automatically hooked into any of the big three?. My recently adopted search engine was suggested as duckduck.go. I'm sure that's not its proper form, but hope some readers will know what I mean.

Purchased membership after discovering protonmail, and would be a very happy camper if given information as to other ways to attain some privacy. About 2+ years ago my email was hacked and I didn't know it until about six months later, when I received an email that purportedly was sent to me by myself. With this discovery, I looked in my spam and found a number of emails in there, also purportedly sent by me!! The leading few words that showed as the beginning of "my" accompanying email were extremely suggestive (at least to me ) of someone having fun writing porn to others, apparently from my email. This lit a light in my slow mind. I realized that this could explain the last words I ever heard from a friend I'd had for about 70 years. They were, "Well! How do you explain yourself...!!! ", to which fury, my startled reply was interrupted by a slamming of receiver and subsequent blocking of any contact by any means, including snail mail and mutual acquaintances. I'd like to know how to secure myself from any further hacking, as experts told me that there's no way I could stop someone from continuing to use my name to send spurious look-alike emails. Anyone with any ideas? Thanks for taking time to read this.

This OS is not free nor it is open source, and it is used in the most reliable and mission critical embedded systems in the industry, including cars, military aircaft, trafic lights and nuclear plants. @Silma, we take for granted how easy it NOW is to send and receive encrypted email. Before Protonmail, it was just too much work for novices to manually encrypt messages. The same situation applies to OS forks. The average person will not spend the time studying how to rework their phone, to switch from android to another OS, and ensure it is secure, and functional with plenty of 3rd party apps.

Creating a proprietary OS (even if it is forked from prior open source work) and combining it with a hardware manufacturer, allows Proton to offer a completely secure hardware and software environment, together with a sandbox to use 3rd party apps that wont be allowed to dip into secure apps outside the sandbox. Like a Black Phone for the masses.

Just as Protonmail built on the early work of email encryption, they can build on the early work of OS alternatives, which currently require a lot of consumer education and technical understanding, and come with plenty of limitations. Protonmail is best equipped to make the leap to a fully functional consumer-ready, fully encrypted OS alternative, with dedicated hardware. They have already built (or are already building) the foundational apps, such as email, calendar, secure storage, and could easily, jointly integrate a very private, highly encrypted messaging app, such as Threema, or just use Signal. The secure sandbox environment will be essential for allowing an expanded selection of apps, while restricting their use of location and other tracking methods.
