Proton Chat - Messaging app
Let's make it in some math style:
ProtonMail : Gmail = ProtonChat : Hangouts
:)
Secure private chat same principle of secure email, but applied to chats.

I'd love to use it as an IM on Android/iOS/Windows Phone too.
With end-to-end encryption, forward secrecy, but the possibility to keep conversation logs locally. (Logs that can be manually copied over to another device, and saved/converted in a human readable format such as HTML)

Any news on this ? I understand that it will not be for 2016, but is it a high priority for 2017 ?

Please do this. All other "secure" chat services either are not secure at all or have a very diluted user base. Proton Chat would a great opportunity for a real secure chat solution using the awesome encryption system you designed.

Please don't do this :-) There are tons of secure chat apps. You are unlikely to beat them in popularity, features, or even security. Focus 100% on creating the best encrypted email in the world.

I would really like to see this implemented.
Chat is major part of digital communication.
Having a secure chat with ProtonMail (even if it was just a XMPP server) would be a great addition to the service.

I would really not want to see this. I subscribed for an email service, not a social account. If Protonmail goes this route, please let there be an option to disable or turn it off completely.

Basic chat communication feature. The contents are scrambled end to end protonmail users, so why not have it in chat? I am only talking about between users of protonmail. Its a good way to attract more customers.

Please create a chat like ghostmail.

It would be absolutely brilliant if the chat could work via some simple background application without the need to be logged within the browser.

why re-invent the wheel? I'd rather have integration of protonmail and signal, which seems to gradually become the de facto encrypted messaging standard...

A very good idea .. Finnish startup has done a secure chat and will be released soon, ..it is based on the same principles than protonmail encrypting everything inside the service .. However, I would rather use the tools in one place that use many tools to ensure privacy ..and to get rid of Telegram, Whatsup and Hangouts

Suggestion: maybe a XMPP server would be a nice temporary solution for chat.

I would also like to use chat in protonmail. I migrated from gmail to protonmail and having a chat app beside protonmail is realy a great feature. Actually my family doesnt want to migrate on protonmail because they like the gmail chat so much. Really its nothing special but people got used to it. Any update on proton chat is appreciated from my side. So please do share when the plans get an update or a change. BTW Thank you for making protonmail.

I think you should really talk to the people at wire (wire.com). They provide a beautiful messenger that makes encrypted calls, video calls, chats, etc.. They are also not based in the USA. Their app does not force users to use their phone number, which is a big plus.

+1 for this idea.
It could leverage SMTP if needed, basically running as a quick email back and forth, but with a neater front end for the user, to make it appear as IM?
Also, if the app would be too much work for a trial, perhaps a web based version for the pilot?
