I find it difficult to understand why Proton Contacts cannot be used like regular Android contacts, or at the very least be properly synchronized with the Android contacts system.
The current approach effectively forces users to maintain two separate contact lists: one within the Proton ecosystem and another on their Android device. This creates unnecessary administrative overhead and increases the risk of inconsistencies, outdated information, and missing contacts.
For a service that positions itself as a professional and privacy-focused solution, seamless integration with the native Android contacts framework—or at least reliable two-way synchronization—should be expected. The current implementation feels unnecessarily isolated and does not align well with practical day-to-day usage.

The way contacts are implemented in the Android version is highly impractical. Instead of providing a separate contacts section or a dedicated contacts app, contacts can only be accessed through the mail application.

This is already inconvenient in itself, but it becomes a serious usability issue for users with larger mailbox structures. In a professional environment, it is common to have hundreds of folders and subfolders. Every time you want to access your contacts, you must scroll through the entire folder hierarchy until you finally reach the “Contacts” entry at the very bottom.

This unnecessary extra step makes everyday use frustrating and inefficient. Accessing contacts should be quick and straightforward, without requiring users to navigate through an extensive folder structure first.

The Android version of this email application suffers from a major usability issue: folders and subfolders cannot be collapsed.

While this may be acceptable for casual users, it becomes a serious problem in professional environments. In customer management and other business-related use cases, it is common to have several hundred folders and subfolders. Because the entire folder structure remains permanently expanded, navigation becomes cluttered, inefficient, and unnecessarily time-consuming. For users managing complex mailbox structures, the app is practically unusable.

Another significant drawback is the way contacts are accessed. Contacts are not available through a separate menu or dedicated section; instead, they must be opened from within the email application itself. As a result, users must scroll through the entire folder hierarchy to reach the final menu item, "Contacts." With hundreds of folders and subfolders, this becomes extremely frustrating and inefficient.

It is difficult to understand why such a fundamental feature as collapsing and expanding folders is missing from the Android version. For professional users, this functionality is essential and would significantly improve the overall user experience and productivity.

Work on this feature request is underway, starting with iOS.

🗓️ A new calendar invite widget shows the main event info in all emails that contain event invites. Tapping on it takes you to the  #ProtonCalendar app directly from your inbox.
