ProtonMail offers encrypted contacts for both web and mobile applications (https://protonmail.com/blog/encrypted-contacts-manager/). Calendar and note functionality will be released in the future.

This answer doesn't address the issue. Yes they're encrypted. But they're not android contacts. They're not recognized as contacts by any other app. You can't share a whatsapp contact to proton, and expect Proton to catch the intent. Because Proton contacts aren't android contacts.
More egregiously, no other app (say, your watch) is able to sync calendar events, because the proton calendar isn't a recognized Android calendar. It's an app that happens to have a calendar, but it's not a Calendar in Android. No other app acknowledges this. So you can't add events to it easily, your watch won't see it, and a lot of behaviors that could take advantage of android events just aren't possible with Proton. And yes, I understand the privacy concerns with Google. But Google isn't the whole of Android. There's ungoogled phones. I expect them to rise in the future. And the option to sync to Android should be made, even if it's with warnings for people that have Google sync.

Yeah...Trying to send your important emails to Proton so you can have them safe during a trip...and then not being able to find them. Luckily gmail would find them in a second. This sucks and it's blocking me from using Protonmail as a standalone app.

Why the need to reinvent the wheel at every step? Why not let Proton Calendar be an Android Calendar app, so I can use other calendars and sync events to things like my smartwatch? Will we also have to wait at their own clumsy pairing thingy implementation?

Yup... Search still missing. Outbox folder still missing. Inbox seems to download only a short cache of emails. No option is given to control how much.
No way to know if any given email is the full email, or just the unsynced header. Unless you try to open while you're already traveling and offline, and surprise! ...your booking number code can't be seen, because it was just the email header, without the email actual contents.
No way to know if your email in the 'sent' folder is actually 'sent'...or it is still actively sending. That's terrible app feedback, very misleading.
If you're traveling, these are really deal breakers.
