It also NEEDS to be possible to access (download) photos via the API, using something like rclone. This fixes the 'no linux client' issue and also makes it possible to work properly with large photo libraries.

Just signed up for Proton Family to move all my photos from Backblaze Cloud (where I cant preview them) to Proton Drive (where I cant preview them, unless I download them to my phone or laptop and then upload them again in the photos view only).
It seems like the /Photos directory is completely inaccessible from the normal file explorer, or via rclone (syncing to /Photos just creates a new Photos folder in the my files view).
This is just really bad design. Photos are files, and it should be possible to manage them as such.
I want to be able to set the location of 'Photos' to somewhere in 'My Files' and have them preview properly, not have them put in some other location which appears to be inaccessible from the API (at least in rclone).
This is absolutely essential. Rclone is the defacto tool for moving files between cloud providers, so being able to use it to migrate to / from proton drive, or for syncing different sources of data into proton drive is absolutely key.
Rclone also needs to have access to all of the 'special' folders, not just My Files. That means access to 'Computers' and 'Photos' as well (honestly these should ALL be accessible via 'My Files' rather than separate magic stuff.
I know you're struggling to find Linux developers, so maybe the solution to the Linux Client thing is to work with the RClone developers (who currently have a proton drive beta that works really well except for not being able to deal with Photos / Computer backups) to get rclone absolutely solid.
