**Title:** I created an open-source differential sync tool for Proton Drive CLI on Linux (with symlink support & fast snapshot caching)
Hey everyone,
Like many Linux users using the official Proton Drive CLI, I noticed that the CLI alone lacks differential synchronization and fails/crashes when encountering symbolic links.
To solve this for my own backups, I built **protondriveCliSync**:
👉 **GitHub:** https://github.com/baweibel-ch/protondriveCliSync### What it does:
- ⚡ **Instant Differential Sync:** Uses local snapshot caching (`~/.cache/protondrive_sync/`) so runs with 0 changes finish in < 0.1s without hitting the cloud API.
- 🔗 **Full Symlink Support:** Supports `-l` (converts symlinks to `.rclonelink` like rclone) or `-L` (follows symlinks and uploads real content).
- 🗑️ **Smart Trash & History:** Respects Proton Drive version history, moves deletes to cloud `/trash/` (or permanently purges with `--no-history`).
- 🛡️ **Zero Dependencies / Standalone Binary:** Includes an `install.sh` and a self-contained Linux executable (built via PyInstaller, no Python required on target machine).
- 🔒 **Non-blocking Auth:** Built-in timeout probes against boot/VPN delays + automatic browser login. It’s completely open source (GPLv3). Hope it helps anyone looking for a reliable way to automate Linux backups to Proton Drive! Feedback and PRs are welcome.
Hi @Mario and everyone looking for a working Linux CLI solution,
I ran into the exact same issues with the official Proton Drive CLI (missing symlink support and non-selective differential uploads).
To solve this, I wrote an open-source companion tool called protondriveCliSync: 👉 https://github.com/baweibel-ch/protondriveCliSync
What it adds on top of the official Proton Drive CLI:
Symlink support: either follow/dereference symlinks (-L) or preserve symlinks across syncing (-l)
Selective & differential sync: only uploads files that actually changed, avoiding full re-uploads
Clean status & error handling: detects auth/keychain issues, stale drafts, and shows clear progress
Available both as a Python script or as a self-contained standalone Linux binary (no Python installation needed).
Feel free to test it, open issues, or contribute! Hope it helps others who want to use Proton Drive on Linux today.
