Being able to create custom folders
You seem to believe that the ability to add folders is "Completed" by telling people to use labels. Color labels just don't cut it.
All the emails will still reside in my inbox or archive. Every other internet email service offers the option to create custom folders, why not Protonmail? This issue has come up again and again from the start.

My bugbear is that I cannot use Archive with sub-folders
Archive/2024
Archive/2023
etcIt seems as if have to either:
1. Create a custom ARCHIVE folder, then sub-folders
OR
2. Do annual export to {PDF -

It says that this feature has been completed, but I still can't make sub-folders. It seems like a basic feature for an email service. I don't know of one, except this one that doesn't have it. When will it become available???????

We need more than 3 folders. I'm happy to pay for access to them but I don't need everything included in the plans so I refuse to pay for it just to access folders. I want to buy access to or just simply to buy folders themselves for use on my account.

M,
Did anyone ever get back with you? It's been over a year since your post. Sorry for the belated reply. Lol
I only came on to find the same answer and never saw the answer.
Pounded keys for an hour..
Solution: go to 'settings'.
Go to 'folders manager's
Click on folder you wish to delete.
'Delete' button will highlight at the bottom.
Hope this helps someone.

I have duplicated a folder and want to delete one of them. Does anyone know how to delete a folder? I'm sure I've missed it somehow. Thanks for a reply.

Would be nice to have a separate label and folder button to collapse/expand them. Right now both labels and folders are mixed up in the sidebar. Would be great if you could separate them. Bit more organized in my opinion and easier to find labels/folders
Thanks

Great work implementing this! Now we only need Sub-folders/Sub-labels. Right now this seems to be the one regarding this with the most votes and also marked as planned: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/284483-feedback/suggestions/7849656-labels-are-great-but . Let's vote that one to the top as well!

The lack folder and limit of labels is strictly an attempt to get you to pay for their upgraded service. You can have be rated "#1 in Free Secure Emails" but if you are only allowed one free email per month guess what? It isnt a free service. RUBBISH

I would like folders because one is used to it. But to my surprise the label system works fine. Its seems more flexible because I sometimes run into the problem of not knowing how to classify or categorize a mail. Then there could be a tendency to make to many directories and sub-directories which defeat the purpose of storing the mail to be able to find them.
The disadvantage is the number of labels permitted. A free account should have no limit because the label system I suspect, would be cheaper than creating directories on a server, taking up space per account. Different labels should be cheaper and so one mail might end up with 5 labels and still not unnecessarily put demands on server storage.
I think those who use ProtonMail for small groups of people that deal with mail coming from several different sources, to exchange secure information or contact people from a secure address need at least 100 labels to classify and sort the mail.

The label argument sounds great. But as a new Protonmail user, they just look like another learning curve to me. I'm already swamped with the issues of giving up one account for another, notifying everyone, moving my contacts, moving my folder contents, etc. I'm not interested in another learning curve, I want what I feel comfortable with from using several other email services: folders. It's possible that that's the way most other new users feel about it.
That said, Protonmail is amazing me with how easy to use in most other ways. Smooth sailing for the most part. I like it.

Come on, labels are exactly the same as folders, in fact they are better as you can have the same email in numerous places. All you have to do is add a label then archive. Your inbox is now clear and your email is filed under its respective label.
Sure it's different to dragging the email to a folder, but it is cleaner and more powerful when you use the functionality of labels.
Spend 5 minutes doing this and you'll soon understand the power of labels.

See my "new idea" posted March 10 regarding adding filters to eliminate labeled, archived and trashed mail from the inbox and sent "folders". It they do this, I think it will then be equivalent to actual folders.

I love protonmail, but a big downer is, the lack of custom folders. Labels are nice, but they just don't have the same potential that folders have

Hi there.
I am new to Protonmail and indeed labels feel clumsy to me. I also have a question : is it possible to rename a label ?
Thx for your help. -

Yes, definitely a MUST have on Protonmail to make it more legit. Those features already exist
on other major emails providers. We're not in the 90's anymore, we don't deal with 1 email a week so for most of us out there, we NEED to be able to sort/manage our emails. This one is a no brainer and easy to implement, it's not a fancy feature. Come on, show us what the Swiss can do!!!
Thank you! -

Irrespective of 'folders vs labels', if users (particularly paying users) want folders, then it would be a good thing for Protonmail to do. People manage their emails in different ways, would be nice if this was catered for.
Folks at Protonmail, you're doing a great job by the way!:)
