Just a follow-up:
As per version 5.18.18, the Auto-connect function is finally working on my Android TV, also on boot and restart!
Only issue is, it takes around 45 seconds for the app to autostart and auto-connect after the Home Screen shows up, even when the Wifi connects within 5 seconds. So for a while you may think it doesn't work, but it does. Compared to the android/linux apps (which take only 5 seconds to autoconnect) it is still really slow, but it's a step in the right direction, and I hope it improves with the time.
Now just waiting for the Kill Switch :) Keep it up!

2026. Five years later. Here a (Proton Unlimited) user update on these requests:
1. Auto Connect to VPN on Boot / Restart. It doesn't work completely. Turning the TV off (suspend) and then on with the remote shows the vpn connection re-enabled. But if you choose restart or cut the power off/on then the TV reboots and Proton VPN doesn't reconnect.
Even after choosing all the right tv/app settings (power optimizations Off / App Guard Permission Auto Management Off / Auto-start On (both in app and system) + Associative Auto-start On), the vpn doesn't auto start/connect. But 2 other apps I use which have the same auto-start requirements/settings (alternative launcher+button re-mapper) do work as intended. So it doesn't seem to be a limitation on my Android TV model (TCL) or Android 12 system, but on the proton app side. Maybe it did work at some point in the past, but not anymore. Please try to fix it!
2. VPN Kill Switch. Still waiting for this feature! The vpn still disconnects several times during the day, depending on the app or a certain amount of time. There's no notification poping up and you have go back to the home page to check it every time. It's really unsafe and annoying :(
The best functionality would be a Kill Switch that forces re-connect after each disconnection. What would be then, after 5 years of plannning, a realistic expectation for us to have this feature finally added to the TV app?
3. Ability to choose the Connection Protocol. This feature was added at some point within the settings and works as inteded. Thanks!
I would like nonetheless to add another improvement to the list, If I may:
4. Ability to connect via Secure Core, as the Android/Linux/Mac/Windows apps do. Right now you can choose as a paid user between 'plus' and free servers, which is great. But I pay the full suite to be able to use all the functions on all my devices. What would be the technical hurdle to implement full connection feature parity between all apps?
Thanks in advance for your time and consideration.
Kind regards and keep the great work! (faster if possible ;) -

There's been plenty of people pushing for this over the years.

There has been many requests for the TV apps to be improved. It looks like they are finally in the 'Planned' section, however I imagine it will be a while before any real changes are made.
Unfortunately it probably isn't a huge priority to Proton but realistically a kill switch and auto connect feature should be paramount in 2025. Other apps have these features but I simply trust Proton and their products than say Surfshark.

Both features are critical and should be present on the Android TV app.

This was requested years ago and still not implemented. On of the most important features regarding security.
And even not a big deal to add it -

It's absolutely critical these things get implemented, we all knows it's the best VPN out there but for users who are coming from other companies the lack of a kill switch/ auto connect feature must be so off-putting.
Take Surfshark for example, they have the above features but they don't work properly at all, I feel Proton is missing a trick here.

I have requested this via email a few times now.
I would like to see a kill switch & auto connect feature added to android & Fire TV apps, currently there is no kill switch feature and I've suffered IP exposure when I thought the app was connected, when in fact it had disconnected itself.
The VPN doesn't automatically connect either when the internet is connected, it used to but no longer does, I've tried and tested this on a few different systems but get the same result unfortunately.
The app needs more work and more features which I get told are coming but there's no timeframe which I completely understand.

Split Tunnelling should be added to this list.

The lack of auto connect is severely disappointing, even more so given how long its been like this going by this request.

Hi and thanks for best vpn services, I have a problem:
On my phone, I can only connect through stealth protocol, right now I can't connect to Protonvpn on my Android TV,I want to change the protocol setting on the TV app but I can't find any settings on the Android TV app.

These 3 features are very important, a must have on Android TV as well. As these are settings one doesn't change often, they don't need to be accessible via remote control or remotes including the mouse feature only, I guess this makes the development easier. Furthermore competitors do have these settings on their Android TV app, otherwise I like the app very much, better design than competition.
