Automatically enable vpn on public or compromised Wifi's
Offer a switch to make Proton VPN automatically connect to its services when it detects that you are connected to a Public or Compromised Wifi.
This can be useful if you don't want the VPN to turn on in your home wifi, but you still want to turn it on when connected to a public wifi.

Pretty convenient way of managing this would be by using whitelist/blacklist.
My use case is the following:
I have set up my home router to use Proton VPN. I would blacklist my home wifi to turn VPN on Android devices off in this case (simply to prevent battery drain). -

I have a pr out for the windows client: https://github.com/ProtonVPN/win-app/pull/101

Honestly, I do not understand how this can be requested/mentioned May 2022 and still not implemented. ProtonVPN on a mobile device is useless without that essential feature. I'm not using ProtonVPN anymore because of the lack and switched to NordVPN.

Android Proton VPN does this now. Open VPN, activate WiFi and the VPN will automatically activate. Yay!

Seems like a no-brainer, but please also incorporate auto-VPN-off-feature for trusted networks.
We need this when using VPN on router.
If e.g. iPhone has VPN turned on, it registers as a separate network and is therefore unable to stream to e.g. Apple TV via trusted wireless home network. With the current Proton VPN functionality, you need to turn off VPN manually to be able to stream.
Btw, I have tried using automation on iPhone, but in my experience it makes auto connectivity unstable, which in turn activates the kill switch meaning I have to turn on VPN manually anyway when leaving my trusted network.

Please implement this Proton so we can stop using 3rd party apps to accomplish this

I'm not sure how you could robustly detect this, but it'd be great for at least those of us that have ProtonVPN on our routers. Knowing that I'm protected when on-the-go with my phone and laptop, but at home it's all going through the router and not double-VPNing and the like would be amazing.

It would be really useful to auto-connect when insecure networks are detected. It would be useful to not connect when ProtonVPN is active on the home router, but I can't think of a reliable and secure way to detect it.

My phone rarely uses a data connection, so the WIFI is used when available
Public WIFI connects in two ways after phone WIFI is enabled; 1) Automatically connects, or 2) Requests a verification screen to activate connection. Once the connection is established then Proton VPN app is loaded, server selected, and wait for a connection.
Problem: The public WIFI has access to my device until a VPN connection is established.
Request: Prepare the VPN app to automatically activate when an active WIFI connection is established.

I think Surfshark does this pretty well. They can run as "almost always on", where the VPN is running whenever you're not connected to a customizable list of wifi SSIDs. E.g. it disables itself when you're connected to your home network (with internet access), but otherwise it is on.
That is the functionality I most miss in ProtonVPN. -

I miss this option a lot after in switched from HMA to Proton VPN. In standard secure environments like my secure home environment where the VPN is running on my router, I don't want to have my Proton VPN on automatically as it has a negative impact of the battery capacity of my devices

Can we rewrite this feature request into "Automatically enable/disable VPN base on Wi-Fi SSID", I think it would be clearer.
Obviously this feature should be disabled by default.
As an example, the IVPN app can do it on iOS and it works realiably.

I marked this one also as critical because i can also confirm the double VPN (Home Router + APP VPN) issue.
My entire network is already running through ProtonVPN using Wireguard. When my phone is active with the ProtonVPN app in the Wi-Fi, it causes issues every now and then, until I disable the connection. This leaves it exposed unless I remember to reconnect after leaving the house. -

I use ProtonVPN configured on my router at home, so I only want the VPN client to connect when I'm on networks other than my home network. I would like the VPN client to connect in Kill switch mode when not connected to networks on a customisable list of trusted networks. Network identity could be establish by SSID or a combination of settings obtained from DHCP (e.g. IP range, DNS postfix, etc).

If you buy a VPN it is to use it ALL THE TIME 24/7 and 365 per year, not for just 1 day per month.
Or just don't buy a VPN

You should assume any networks that you connect to that you can't configure and control the settings of is a compromised network.
I use my VPN 24/7/365 -- even when I''m home. Not using it would provide my ISP a treasure trove of information about me that they will in turn build a profile and sell my information. A second reasons I use my VPN even at home, I don't web sites to know know my public address and then determine my location. You pay for a VPN service, why use it in select locations?
Lastly, of all the WiFi networks worldwide, how would Proton determine if a WiFi network is public? And how are they to know if a WiFi network is compromised?

It could also add a whitelist setting where you set which signals to auto-disable it on.
