Proton: This is an important addition, and it is great to see that you are adding support. However, import / export is not the same as native support for opening and editing these files. When you create a new document, even importing one, you still enforce creation of the .protondoc format. This behaviour should be a choice by the user. I would rather default to ODF and export to .docx or .protondoc when needed.

There should be an open format support in drive (import/export/edit) so we are not platform-dependent and can edit document offline. I understand current limitations may be due to technical issues about encryption, but this isn't good.

It's slightly shocking they are using their proprietary format by default and do not support open format. From a strategic point of view, it doesn't make much sense since most Proton users want to deemphasise their big tech reliance via open source and privacy tools.

It would be a big step in the right direction to support an open format like .odt for documents and .ods for spreadsheets!

I'm utterly baffled that there's ZERO support for the TRULY universal Open Document format. Yet another area where Linux users are left out in the cold, especially considering the lack of a Proton Drive client for Linux.

How am I supposed to work with my LibreOffice files in Proton Drive?

Instead of further bolstering the proprietary formats that hold the world at ransom, this should have been a golden opportunity to bolster ODF, and free users of the shackles of Microsoft Office.

I am shocked to see this is an issue. I am in the process of changing over our family usage and as a long time supporter of Proton. I am just shocked you dont support the open format standard. When will this be resolved?

Create the library if there is not one. Opensource it. This is the way.

The use of proprietary formats in Proton Drive should be considered a dead end. This is not how internet works.
My showstopper for using Proton Drive is that there is no support to preview docx- and odt files on my Android phone. Therefore I use Synology Drive which does.

I don't really care if I can edit documents in the Proton Drive application. I just want them to be easily editable in Linux using Libre Office or OnlyOffice much like you do in Windows where you just open documents from the synced folder.

I was considering Proton mail & Drive as a good solution in order to leave Google docs & my access provider (for the mail) together. As my computer's OS is Linux, I'm used to work with ODF documents. Moreover, the ODF format avoids very irritating dependencies toward Microsoft. Using OOXML format as a basis for proton Docs is a fault, since that so-called "transitional OOXML" is complete mess (we should at least rely upon OOXML strict).
Consequently, I won't go ahead with Proton unless things change quickly.

PS: this was one of the key reasons back in the day that I moved away from Google Docs...
If Proton wants to be serious about creating an alternative to Google and Microsoft - ie critically an environment that does not deliberately tie you in and respects user privacy and data ownership (which implies transferability) they should make the ability to store and work on Open Document Format a starting point....

A key decision element for me to consider migration from MS Office is to move to a platform that natively supports an open document format - so that editing is feasible whether working natively in Proton web or on a document synchronised to a linux desktop using Open Office or using mobile.
The lessons from the last 18 months is that I never want to be tied into a Tech Bro environment again - which means my files are mine, and I am happy to rent space and functionality in a cloud environment...

The Proton team mentioned there are no browser libraries for ODT processing — odf-kit solves this. It's a pure JavaScript/TypeScript library (Apache 2.0) that reads and generates ODT files entirely client-side with no server required. https://github.com/GitHubNewbie0/odf-kit

At least import from and export to ODT should be supported. With the other formats supported this should be an easy addition...

At least, there should be an option to import .odt files, not just .docx!
Again, the FOSS community is ignored, as in the case of a standalone app (Proton Drive) for Linux.
