Proposal for Integrating NFC Cards into ProtonWallet
TLDR: A secure, privacy-focused, and open-source digital wallet alternative is needed to address concerns over transaction tracking and data privacy/security in mainstream wallets like GPay and Apple Wallet, with ProtonWallet potentially filling this gap.
There is a growing need for a secure, privacy-focused, and open-source alternative to mainstream digital wallets like Google Pay (GPay) and Apple Wallet. This demand is driven by concerns over transaction tracking and data privacy/security, as users become increasingly aware of the potential risks associated with using these services.
Personal experiences, such as discovering transaction tracking in Apple Wallet and being restricted from installing alternative wallets, have highlighted the need for a solution that prioritizes user control and data protection. Similarly, issues with installing GPay on operating systems like /e/OS have further emphasized the importance of having a reliable and flexible digital wallet option.
ProtonWallet, as a potential solution, can increase its use cases and become more relevant by addressing these concerns. By providing a secure and private digital wallet experience, ProtonWallet can align with ProtonMail's goal of increasing privacy and user control. This can be achieved by:
- Offering a open-source platform that allows users to manage their transactions and data securely
- Providing features that prioritize user anonymity and data protection
- Allowing users to install and use the wallet on a variety of operating systems and other privacy-focused platforms
- Expanding the wallet's functionality to support a wide range of payment methods and use cases, such as online transactions, contactless payments, and peer-to-peer transfers
By filling this gap in the market, ProtonWallet can become a leading alternative to mainstream digital wallets, providing users with a secure, private, and flexible solution for managing their financial transactions. This, in turn, can help to promote a more privacy-focused and user-centric approach to digital payments, aligning with the goals of ProtonMail and the broader community of users who value data protection and security.

Totally agree with this point — there’s definitely a growing need for a privacy-focused, open-source wallet. Most mainstream options like GPay and Apple Wallet track too much data and limit user control. A wallet like ProtonWallet could truly bridge that gap by ensuring transparency, anonymity, and compatibility with privacy-centric systems. It would be a perfect extension of Proton’s mission to protect user freedom and data privacy further if your making payment specially to get your land registered or paying fee to get LCP you must use this service and https://ebiharbhumi.com provides you the step by step guide about how to apply for LCP on government website

Hello,
As per UserVoice rules, please make sure your post adheres to Proton’s new branding rules:
ProtonMail is now Proton Mail
ProtonWallet was never ProtonWallet, it always was Proton Wallet.Thanks.

Hello, this is Privacy101 relaying Andy Yen’s response on an AMA.
I am personally quite interested in doing this, but there are lots of legal and regulatory hurdles so this is not the easiest one to do. But I have also heard from a lot of users that this is something they really want, and that will certainly be factored in our strategic planning. -Andy

Absolutely agree. All the alternative options at this point we have reason not to trust.
I was just suggesting this myself before I saw your post.

First and foremost, I’d really like to see it expanded beyond crypto. Here’s how I envision this.
With the state of things lately, how payment processors are censoring, monitoring, and controlling what we buy, it would be nice to have Proton Wallet act as an in-between.
I’d like to suggest the option to add our credit and debit cards, and other such payment options. And to be able to pay things directly through Proton Wallet as a ‘pseudo card’ itself that would hide any transactions through it as simply through ‘Proton’.
This way, Proton Wallet would be expanded as a secure wallet for privacy, security, and help us fight back and keep ourselves secure while offering comfort and convenience to customers.
Crypto certainly can be private, but it’s not for everyone. I think Proton Wallet has potiental for so much more.
I’m unsure how possible it is in terms of programming, but I think it is absolutely worth investigating in terms of viability.
