Open email in separate window
Some emails are too wide to be displayed inside the third frame of the web-app. We have the option to change the appearance of the web-app from three to two frames but it could be done easier.
I request an option to double-click an email in the list to open this email in a separate window. This window should than open as wide as necessary to fit the width of the specific email.

Update, after following the instructions for a workaround from @Beth.
- YES in Windows11/MS-Edge, I have been able to create a 'new window' in which to write an email, by following the instructions for a workaround posted by @Beth (with thanks)
- NO, I cannot expand the size of the new email window to cover the entire screen and block out ProtonMail in the 'background' (here, a 15" laptop) -- so not enough space for me to write a longer email, not to mention a distractions such as multi-colour scheme and controls that cannot be used while typing- The workaround posted by @Beth did not work for me in Mozilla/Firefox ('Focus' as well as 'regular' mode), nor in Google/Chrome ('Incognito' as well as 'regular' mode)
Please let me know if there is a way to increase the amount of available space for emails by hiding the menu at the bottom of an email 'window' for font size, etc.
WITH THANKS.

DISABILITY / ACCESSIBILITY ALERT !
The capacity to compose and read emails in stand-alone 'windows' is CRUCIAL for me as a person whose disabilities place constraints on computer use. Often I absolutely must to be able to enlarge the text on email programs. And to focus, I often want to block out background 'noise' on a computer screen, too. By the time that I enlarge the font size for the sake of readability within ProtonMail, I can only see about two or three lines of text. Yet I can still see all the regular 'controls' for ProtonMail.I will try the workaround suggested by 'Beth' about ten days ago.
Wish me luck, please and thank you.
And PLEASE 'action' this request as a matter of human rights for persons with disabilities similar to mine.

How come we cannot open an email in a new window after all these years? I will be forced to enable the bridge and use an email client so I can zoom in on messages without messing up the whole interface on the web page.

I have found a workaround that works for me in Windows 11. I'm not sure if this will help anyone else or if you will have the same screen options that I have. Here are the steps I use:
1) Go to Inbox
2) Right click "New Message"
3) From the resulting dropdown menu, choose "More Tools", then "Open in Sidebar". This creates a clone of my Inbox in the sidebar.
4) In the sidebar, click the "Expand Window" icon in the upper right (box with diagonal arrow). This opens the sidebar in a new tab.
5) In this new tab, close the sidebar using the X in the upper right corner of the sidebar.
6) Your original window is now full screen, and your second window is also full screen. Both windows can be sized or positioned as you like. I can create more tabs by repeating the procedure.Hope this helps at least some people.

Correct! I just message Proton about this, mostly about composing new emails. With a small laptop it's almost impossible to compose an email in that small pop-up window. We urgently need the option to maximize emails and composer to full screen in a separate window.

Proton developers should have implemented this feature several years ago (maybe even when the first release of the Proton Mail app came out). Yet, here we are (now 5 years downstream of when users first complained about this missing functionality), and Proton Mail app still does NOT have this feature.
I think Proton needs to prioritize this feature now. They spend so much time coming out with "new" software products instead of concentrating on making their current line of products the best they could be.
Unless Proton gets its act together pretty soon, I'll be seriously considering not renewing my paid subscription.

New user as of now. Astonished that a mail can't be opened in a separate window as I've been used to over the years. This is a showstopper for me. If not fixed in the very near future I will have to abandon protonmail. For now I have to keep using gmail instead.

I just finished shifting all my emails over to Proton Mail after paying a bunch of money only to find out I can't pop out emails into a new window. WTF? Right now I have an email open that I'm using to draft something on another screen, and I had to close out of it so I could get into my inbox to confirm my email so I could leave this comment.

It's too cumbersome to have to keep changing the layout every time a wide email comes along. Most programs would allow you to click on the email and expand it or open it in a new window. Please add this feature!

excuse me, but this thread has been here a while and still they haven't done anything about this? SMH very disappointing. I pay a lot of money to proton every year. PLEASE PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR CUSTOMERS' REQUESTS. Moreover, honestly we shouldn't have to even ask about this in the first place, yall should have made separate windows from the beginning. Thanks

New Proton mail user and astounded this is not a basic functionality. Ouch! Can only echo many comments already posted about how important it is to be able to have multiple emails open simultaneously. A very basic feature that begs the question: do the designers of pm actually use their own product??

In the Column and Row Layout respectively, a single click opens the selected mail in a full window (within the ProtonMail window) or the detail pane next to it (right hand side).
A double-click on a mail should open it in a full separate window or tab instead (configurable as a new Settings option).

Request to have the ability to open email in its own full size window. Issue: Reading messages on my tiny Chromebook have the added burdened by the fact that the left column (Dashboard, Upgrade plan, Recovery, etc.) takes up a 1/4 of the window, rendering the content I'm trying to read ridiculously tedious to read at the minimum of speed.

It would be great if there were a button or a right-click option in the browser to open an email in a separate tab so you can view multiple emails simultaneously. This would also allow you to open emails to view later while going through your list, not to have to constantly start over in a duplicate proton mail tab.
