Better support for GNOME's "Background Apps" feature
Not every Linux desktop environment comes out with support for tray icons, the most infamous one for that being GNOME, one of the most popular desktop environments. Since GNOME 44, it focuses on a "Background apps" feature, which uses xdg-desktop-portal to find apps running in the background, with the ability to show them.
Personally, I must say I like that feature, and would like to avoid installing extensions adding back the tray. At the same time, I'd love it if the Proton VPN was able to start minimized on login in my prefered DE, especially since it's possible for other…

Fix Free Tier Country List: Linux/Config file Shows 10, GUI Apps Display Only 5
This request addresses an inconsistency across ProtonVPN platforms regarding the number of countries available on the Free plan.
Currently:
Linux GUI, CLI, and manual configuration files (OpenVPN/WireGuard) correctly expose 10 free countries, matching what the backend actually provides.
Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, and tvOS apps display only 5 countries in their GUI, even though random connecting to all 10 is possible via backend/API.
This creates a confusing discrepancy for users and contradicts the behavior of Linux clients and manual configs.
Proton and web pages also show mixed information (some mention 5, others implicitly reflect 10), further adding to user confusion.

per app network traffic view like in Windows Task Manager
The Task Manager in Windows shows a live per app view of network data traffic. When using Proton VPN, all network activity is aggregated and listed as data traffic from Proton VPN.
It would be nice if you could see the per app usage in the Proton VPN app.
When the current download or upload traffic is uncommonly high, I would usually check which app is responsible, perhaps you might want to stop the process. Currently, you have to guess what causes the traffic.

Block App Snooping
Implement a feature that prevents an app from accessing other apps. For example, Google and Facebook apps both keep tabs on what is going on in other apps. Duckduckgo has a VPN that disallows any app from accessing any other app, blocking thousands of attempts per hour.

Real Quantum Encryption
For all Apps here are a few post-quantum cryptographic algorithms that are being considered as potential replacements for current cryptographic standards:
- Lattice-based cryptography: This includes algorithms like NTRUEncrypt, Kyber, and NewHope.

Automatic login on the ProtonVPN Linux client
Currently, the ProntonVPN Linux client requires manual login each time. This is really tedious, particularly if the password is very complex. It would be much better if it were possible to log in automatically. This, in particular, is a requirement for automatically starting the VPN client after each reboot.

WireGuard country config files
If I want to make a config file from the Proton VPN website and choose to use OpenVPN, I have the option to create a config file for Country, Standard server, or Secure Core. Conversely, if I choose WireGuard (which seems to be the strong recommendation in this post: https://protonvpn.com/blog/old-ovpn-configs), I can only pick from Standard server or Secure Core.
This may be fine for the occasional ad-hoc connection, but is not ideal when creating a config file for a router.
The Proton VPN website has the option to "Use the best server according to current load and position"…

Using Proton client as an endpoint or route through existing device with proton vpn with LAN availability.
Please add a way to create make the device as an endpoint.
Similar to NordVPN's meshnet.
This would be especially helpful to use netflix so it shows up as in the same household.5 votes -
Latency
You mention gaming as a usecase but don't display latency for servers.
I've used/am using Proton VPN but since I couldn't know latency without manually testing every server and then logging into the game , I had to get exitlag just for gaming. Please implement at latency information and if possible implement something similar to exitlag so I don't have to have multiple subscriptions.3 votes -
Add an VPN endpoint to the Faroe Islands
Hi Proton VPN team,
I’m writing to request the addition of a Faroe Islands server to the Proton VPN network. Many Faroese students studying abroad and are unable to acces content from ect. local tv stations.
CURRENTLY, NO VPN PROVIDER OFFERS AN ENDPOINT THERE, which limits our ability to participate fully in these programs. Due the Faroe Islands small size, not many other countries cover local events there.
Adding a Faroe Islands node would not only serve the local population (~50 k residents) but also attract a niche market of international students and researchers interested in Faroese culture.
Thank you for considering this request. I…

Integration in GL.iNET firmware
Hi
You already integrated Proton VPN into Vivaldi browser (wich is closed source and looks pretty shady). So can you consider integration your VPN into GL.iNET firmware?
I will be really happy with this. And many GL.iNET customers too.
You can see that it is required by this links:

Option to quickly switch to a different VPN server
About once a day, I resolve some connectivity issue by connecting to a different VPN server. Doing this is almost the only way I directly interact with ProtonVPN. The process often goes:
1. Disconnect 2. ConnectBut sometimes, Autoconnect will keep selecting the same server. The process then becomes (Android app):
1. Disconnect 2. Connect (recognize same server) 3. Tap "Countries" 4. Tap search icon 5. Type city name 6. Tap options icon next to city 7. Tap server of choiceMy suggestion: If Autoconnect would disregard servers that I intentionally disconnected from (recently), my experience would be a lot…

Autoconnect when wifi is lost, disconnect on trusted wifi,
I use a vivo Fold 3, there's no VPN option available. Only from within the proton app.
Like Surfshark, an auto connect when no WiFi would be so good. And then, auto disconnect when on trusted WiFi, would be a great addition. As my router is always connected through proton VPN, there's 2 vpn's active when I'm home. And always need to manually disconnect the VPN ... In 2025... Please add these features.5 votes -
Please add an option to show current country via mouse-over in the tray
The topic says it already. Instead of having to open Proton VPN to check which country is active, just hovering over the tray/notification area symbol should give us the info, to which country we are connected.
