Super cool that this will be implemented! It was awesome to see this appear in my inbox from all those years ago! As a programmer I can see udnerstand what that feeling must be like!

Not to be greedy but I would super love to see slides/slideshow feature integrated (perhaps with a nice markdown format) and maybe latex collab! I have been considering recommending proton drive for our business, and there was a project where it would have been very convenient to have a nice privacy friendly E2EE slideshow that people could collab on!

Backup from NextCloud would also be super cool!

It's useless to work hard to maintain all things separately and then dox your user acc in every shared document

Proton is the best email service ever existed. Period.

However, its biggest flaw against competitors is that email is the least used tool for collaboration nowadays, and Proton lacks integration with most other tools due to various factors, with the most obvious being its completely different concept for security and data ownership.

So, how can Proton be better than MS Office and GWorkspace?

Here are some ideas that I think can be created (relatively) easily.

1. ProtonOffice - Integrate OnlyOffice in Proton Drive and whitelabel it (they offer this possibility i think. (Or even better- acquire them and rebrand them to ProtonOffice :))
OnlyOffice is the best alternative to MSOffice and the most compatible with it (which is crucial, when a company wants to have a good OSS-based and secure tools but at the same time to keep being "compatible" with the rest of the world that unfortunately uses MSOffice). The tools for Docs, Sheets, Slides, PDF, and Markdown are there. No need to invent the wheel. Integrate them into Proton Drive and offer a real document collaboration suite.
2. ProtonChat - Create a Matrix/Element-based team chat/collaboration service. Matrix is the best service for secure, encrypted chat in the world, but it lacks UX in all possible ways, making it difficult for a small to mid-size team to use it effectively. (the way they offer their services, the way to install and maintain it. It would be more than great to have a Matrix-based chat with Proton UX and Proton hosting out of the box with the Proton Business Suite.
3. Proton Identity + OAuth - this is self-explanatory, the last missing piece of the puzzle to have a complete suite for SMBs that can fully replace O365 and G-Workspace.

These 3 things are crucial for a complete business suite. I have a personal account in Proton myself, and I adore it. However, the lack of true document collaboration and chat is what stops me from migrating my business to Proton, and I am sure that there are many businesses with the same obstacle. The ideas above propose a way to ship them as quickly as possible without compromising the Proton concepts. There will be work, of course, to integrate them properly, but it is still much easier and faster than inventing the wheel from scratch and developing all these tools.

How is this request nearly a decade old and Proton STILL does not have even a basic spreadsheet app? Kids in undergrad CompSci programs have been making these things for single semester homework assignments for longer than that.

Absolutely agree with this request - the timing couldn't be better for Proton to prioritise a collaborative office suite.

The landscape has fundamentally shifted. With the US Cloud Act in place and American companies increasingly disregarding GDPR compliance, our data simply isn't safe on US-based platforms anymore. We're seeing a growing exodus of privacy-conscious users seeking alternatives, and this trend is only accelerating.

Whilst Nextcloud remains the gold standard for self-hosted collaborative document editing, the reality is that it's far too complex for the average user to set up and maintain. However, if Proton could offer Nextcloud integration directly alongside ProtonDrive - or alternatively implement something like CollaboraOnline as the productivity component - it would be an absolute game-changer.

There's a genuine market opportunity here that's expanding daily. It's not just the security-focused crowd anymore; ordinary Europeans are beginning to understand that entrusting their data to US services is no longer viable. Proton is perfectly positioned to capture this market with a user-friendly, complete office experience that actually respects user privacy.

The feature request mentions preventing downloads/copying, which aligns perfectly with European data protection principles. If Proton could deliver Google Workspace functionality with true zero-knowledge encryption and proper access controls, they'd have a winning formula.

This really should be a top priority.

Europe is in dire need of an alternative to the capabilities offered by Google Workspace and M365. Proton cloud fill this gap with a Proton Workspace!

Work together with Collabora to offer a full Office suite based on LibreOffice with enough storage and collaboration opportunities for Proton members.
This accelerates Proton's efforts for Proton Docs as well.

OnlyOffice is not permitted on EU government computers because of its ownership by P7-Office, a Russian company.

The UK, Singapore and Latvian companies are shell companies for P7-Office.

Look into what Skiff was building before they were acquired. Their concept may be a good idea starter.

Its important. But its not important to reinvent the wheel. Collabora Online (online version of LibreOffice Online) works quite well together with Desktop app + Nextcloud integration. Collabora is also very robust and mature. Proton Docs is in a very rought state, and its only Docs that currently present. It must be better to use something else that works than burn a lot of R&D resources on something made in-house that takes years to get mature enough.

+1. Proton, as great as they are, don't have the bandwidth to develop a comprehensive office alternative. And arguably, they shouldn't, because great OSS solutions like collabora online exist.

This particular set of featurse is the only critical bit preventing me from mobing all my cloud services to a proton unlimited, making alternatives that do support collabora very appealing, even when the companies behind are not as good as proton.
