Linux Client
Proton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Linux client for Proton Drive.

Three years. That’s how long this kinda requests has been open. In that time Proton launched Docs, Photos, Pass, Wallet… but still no Linux Drive client.
Proton says it defends freedom and privacy, yet it only supports Windows and macOS—the two platforms with the heaviest telemetry. Meanwhile, Dropbox, pCloud, Mega, Nextcloud, Icedrive, Internxt and others have had Linux clients for years.
I’m a Visionary subscriber. “rclone” is not a solution—it’s unreliable, buggy, and not acceptable as the official fallback. Linux has one kernel, and AppImage, Flatpak, Snap, and FUSE already exist. Supporting at least one filesystem (EXT4, BTRFS, ZFS) is not rocket science in 2025.
Even Proton’s own idea board proves it: Linux client requests are among the most upvoted of all time. Yet they get buried under “Hot” while in “Top” they stand out. The community has spoken, loudly and repeatedly.
This is no longer a “nice to have.” It’s critical. And postponing it any further is indefensible. Proton, if you want to keep credibility with the people who care most about privacy and open-source values, act now.

It’s been over three years since this request was opened, and still no Linux client exists. In that time, Proton has built many new products and features, but left behind something so basic as file sync support on the operating system most widely used by people who actually care about privacy.
Proton presents itself as a company that protects security and digital freedom, yet it only provides clients for the two platforms with the most invasive telemetry on the planet: Windows and macOS. The absence of a Linux client feels intentional, not accidental.
I’ve been subscribed to the Visionary plan for over a year, and “rclone” cannot be the solution—it comes with too many problems. At the very least, if the challenge is filesystem support, start with just one: BTRFS, ZFS, or EXT4. In an era of AI-driven development, this selective lack of support is simply inadmissible.
A proper Linux client is not a “nice to have” feature—it is essential for users who want to move away from closed ecosystems and entrust their data to Proton. This is not a secondary issue; it’s critical. If Proton wants to keep credibility with the community that values open source and privacy the most, it needs to address this request clearly and make it a priority.
Thanks

Proton provides everything I need, except for a Linux client for Drive. It would be great if the client existed. It's also a bit of a shame that Lumo claims it does exist. Please don't let your AI lie :)

I'm happy with Proton for mail, pass and vpn, but not having drive sync functionality costs me money and time since it prevents me from moving over to Linux/Ubuntu as my only desktop OS.
Mail and Drive clients are the basics and they should be available for Linux. -

I would love to finally move all my devices to linux. I really dislike the big tech companies, and with the current US president, I'm honestly scared using American tech products. File sync is crucial to me, it's basically the only reason I'm holding off on using proton for everything and finally paying for it.

I am loosing my mind over the terrible RClone implementation for protondrive and am praying to god that an official linux client gets created sooner rather than later.
Please give us Proton Drive linux client, we have been asking for years, it's the most voted on issue here, and you said you would have it this summer in the blog post... summer is over in a week, please deliver. -

Seen the End of Summer sale; looked like time to switch everything to Proton; until I tried to get my file backups from dropbox to Proton; tried a lot of solutions; but nothing really worked; will wait till there is a proper solution for the proton drive for linux

This is really important to me, especially as Microsoft continues to erode privacy at the OS level. The web portal is an alright solution for occasional usage, but doesn't really cut it for day-to-day use.

I like Lumo and dislike crypto. But I agree with the overall sentiment to focus on refining the quality and broadening support for existing services. I don't use Linux at the moment (apart from WSL), but I might in the future.
The Windows desktop application is already a bit buggy. For example, I can't properly uninstall Drive or Authenticator because of some unknown error; it does not support removable media or syncing external drives; I can't move or select the install location, and so on. Not a big deal for me currently, but maybe for others.

I'm currently using rsync with automount on Remote resource open.
For local full sync I have an on demand job, that performs entire bidirectional sync.
I understand that Linux users are on average more technical in nature, but setting up a reliable sync on critical personal files shouldn't require sysops levels of knowhow and understanding.

I use a universal blue distro, which means I do not use rpm or deb package manager directly and instead use homebrew for new packages. Flatpak works but this may be an issue with permissions needed. Hope there is flexible enough solution instead of "here is a deb package"

A flatpak is the best way to get around the packaging issue. Rclone does not really work for large filesystems.

I'm amazed that after years of Proton Drive there is still no Linux client (either cli or desktop). A crypto wallet was more important than this?? Really?

I really need to sync my data to drive

"Proton is isn’t that hard create a flatpak every distro can run flatpak."
Unlike the e.g. the Mail Client which would be neat as flatpak, for Drive it might not be suitable to package as flatpak if we want proper system-integration and sync-features (which are the aspects most critically needed)

Proton is isn’t that hard create a flatpak every distro can run flatpak. And it’s the most secure package. I sadly have moved I no longer have faith or trust as patients with Proton.

I know Linux support can be tricky as there are so many different distros and package managers but since I use Linux as my daily driver for work this is pretty essential for me. Basically this an the lack of a full suite (docs, sheets, slides) is the main thing preventing me from cancelling my Google Workspaces subscription and moving to Proton full time. Having a flatpak would be great.
