Proton Photos
basically Google photos, but better because it's encrypted.
As in, a mobile app for backing up and organizing phone photos.
Maybe we could pay a monthly fee for access to Photos, Drive, and VPN service. I'd much rather support an independent company than Google

YESSS great news. I suggest a team up with photoprism. A open source project that could link to a proton drive folder maybe and use it as a photos app…

Manually syncing my photos to my drive is a PITA.

This is necessary. It's hard to justify the 200% additional cost over Google one for only 50% more storage, but a photos app is essential for the transition.

This is a key factor in my and my families adoption of Proton Drive. We're a mixed userbase of Mac, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android and the main reason to have lots of storage is to securely and privately backup our memories.
The most important items for us would be to have mobile apps that take care of upload automatically (ala Google photos or iCloud photos) and a nice way to view photos, ideally via native apps. Live photos support is also a must.

Only if people allow to be tagged!!! Proton - privacy by default, fhs.

Automatically upload all photos and videos captured on my phone to a "Photos" and "Videos" folder in my Proton Drive. When I view the folder, show thumbnails. The fancy scrollbar in Google Photos that allows me to slide through the months would be nice extra touch.

This is one of the primary blockers I must keep using Google Workspace. I would love to consider a migration to Proton, but this is a missing service that some family members need.
It should have an auto-sync process so new photos are updated automatically.
Geolocation (through the metadata) and face recognition (maybe a privacy issue?) can be useful too, so I can tag people or re-visit some locations.
We use iOS devices.

Absolutely! I have been thinking this for awhile now. Glad I'm not the only one. As soon as this comes out I can cut all ties with google.

@ Raymond Engle - 100% agree. ente.io is a slick little app

A simple way to accomplish this is to aquire ente.io in the same way they aquired simplelogin.

Echoing the other comments here: Syncing photos on iOS and Android is what will allow us to move away from Google Workspace in a heartbeat.

Proton Photo is the app you need to develop as soon as possible, it's the number one need of families. I currently use a local Synology NAS because I don't trust the cloud. But if you release Proton App Sync on the Synology Photo model (Sync, Album, FaceID auto arrange, etc...), I would totally switch to the Proton Family plan.
Regarding Proton Family, you should think about a plan for a small family of 3 or a plan with a flexible number of people, because the current family plan is too expensive for some families.

I'd be glad if at least I can start auto-sync'ing pictures and docs from Android/iOS

I am waiting this feature to migrate all my family members to proton: i need an user experience "Google-like" to convince them
