Preload photos in the background for quick viewing
Viewing photos in proton drive is quite cumbersome as it takes a several seconds for each photo to load in high quality. Preloading the next few photos - and keeping the previous few in memory - would make the experience so much more enjoyable.

Yes, but this is just a bandaid over the overall dreadful speed of the photos app in general. Thumbnails that take 30 seconds to load on 1Gigabit connection and have to be re-downloaded every time.

There should be some logic to pre-load/cache photos in proton drive. Can't cache everything, but grabbing the adjacent few rows of photos proactively as users are scrolling feels like an easy win.
Would also proactively cache the past month or two. Realize this impacts storage on the device. Make it a setting.

At this stage, I can't recommend Proton Drive as a photo app to anyone. And for many, this is a deal-breaker to move their files overall from other systems (google, apple, dropbox...)
It's just too painful. As a user, I expect to be able to view/scroll my photos seemlessly, in order to have the same customer experience as with any other photo app (google photos, or iPhotos notably).
Migrating photos seemlessly to Proton Drive, because of this extremely poor CX, can't possibly be considered as an incentive to drive people away from google/apple ecosystems.

Right now, previewing photos in Proton Drive is like watching paint dry!
Waiting for each one to load while browsing through them with the arrow keys gets extremely frustrating by the 3rd or 4th photo.
Beginning to preload the next photo while viewing the current one, as suggested by the OP, is one potential way of speeding things up.

To me this feature is really important to make photos in Proton Drive useful!
