Preview and open .odt OpenDocument Text files
Related to being able to export Proton Docs as .odt files (https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/932839-proton-drive/suggestions/48607370-proton-docs-download-to-odt-feature), it should be possible to preview and open .odt OpenDocument Text files in Proton Docs. Many people choose OpenDocument files as a free and open source alternative to MS Word and Google Docs files. It’s the default file format in LibreOffice, Nextcloud Office, and Collabora. It’s the option that people turn to when they’re tired of being overcharged by Microsoft to open or write a document. It’d be invaluable to have support in Proton Docs for these files.

Using a proprietary format in Proton docs was a mistake from the very beginning. ODT should be native format with an option to export to DOCX or PDF. For me as an individual, the current set-up is not an option. Nor do I think corporate users find this attractive. For those looking for alternatives to US tech giants, there is an upcoming cloud based office.eu. It looks very promising.

Personally, I don't edit documents within Drive. I use it for storage and work on a local based version. Those using it for business purposes would likely want more and better editing features (though, I'd suggest using a dedicated office replacement like Collabra online rather than expecting Proton to build out an entire office suite).
That said, it's ridiculous that I cannot **view** a read-only version of my .odt, .ods, .odp documents within drive. This has been a functional feature for cloud storage for decades. I do not work in Microsoft formats, and I don't want to have a save as copy just so I can view it online. This is not a good idea for two reasons: first I would always have to remember to "save as" docx and overwrite that file after I save and am done working on my working .odt copy; second there is a risk I notice something I want to change after I save as docx and make the change not realizing I'm not in my working copy. Creating a third file type of proton docs is just extra terrible, how am I supposed to work on that copy offline? I can't pull it directly out of my file explorer so I have to export (aka download) it as a docx, save it in my files, work on it, and then reconvert it in the web browser to a proton doc?

If Proton has ambissions of customers in the public sector this is not negotiable in the EU. The European Union framework for open standards is anchored by the European Interoperability Framework (EIF) and mandated by the Interoperable Europe Act. Interoperability is the core foundation of the European Interoperability Framework (EIF). While the EIF does not explicitly mandate ODF (OpenDocument Format) by name, the framework strongly requires the use of open standards to achieve interoperability and prevent vendor lock-in, which directly points to the use of formats like ODF.

Fully documented file format should be implemented. All of your competitors I am familiar with support odt.

The Proton team mentioned there are no browser libraries for ODT processing — odf-kit solves this. It's a pure JavaScript/TypeScript library (Apache 2.0) that reads and generates ODT files entirely client-side with no server required. https://github.com/GitHubNewbie0/odf-kit

Agree, OpenDocument files should be the default (odp ,ods and odg).

Only wanted to add that there are a sizeable number of people who use the doc editors mentioned in the request. And it can behave just like the docx uploads - be read only. Right now I'm having to print PDF versions every time I make changes on docs I'm sharing with others.

I don't really understand why isn't supported by design. The ODF is surely the preferred option for us, the Proton target audience. Not if they try to cater businesses only, though.

From the lead dev on Discord (https://discord.com/channels/1178303648443416576/1446131971381137529/1446158781820960911):
“ not for now - we take privacy very seriously which means we don't ever see your file on the server, it's all client-side. unfortunately there are no libraries whatsoever for ODT processing for browsers, and making one is a pretty large effort we do not have the resources for right now.”
So I guess for now the process needs to be OpenDocument format > MS Office format > Proton Docs// Sheets.
Not sure about ODF, but so far I’ve had reasonable success copying the text of Google Sheet and pasting it with formatting into Proton Sheets.

To add to this, support for the other OpenDocument file types would be just as important. Especially with the recent launch of Proton Sheets. Being able to modify OpenDocument files without removing them and re-adding them into my Proton Drive would be an excellent addition.

* .ods (Spreadsheet) (LibreOffice Calc)
