Monero payment option
I would love to be able to create a truly anonymous email account so I would like to be able to pay for premium accounts with Monero or Bitcoin.
We will be adding Monero as a payment option for our VPN plans by the end of Summer 2025.

Credit card and Paypal as only available options for a guest on order form, is a problem. BTC and XMR should be there too.
Proton staff says that one can purchase through these authorized proxies:
- https://coingate.com/gift-cards/proton-vpn-plusat least one of these supports Monero.

Any specific reason this will be implemented for VPN only? I'd really prefer to renew my Proton Unlimited account using Monero.

Will that be available only for ProtonVPN ? Or will this be also available for the payment of Plans ?

Is there a reason why this is specifically for VPN plans and not others, like the Unlimited bundle?

The ProtonVPN General Manager said that Monero support for Proton would be on the summer roadmap if enough people signed a petition like this

Dear Proton Team,
I would really appreaciate having the option to pay for my Proton Account using Monero.
I listened to the interview, what I like about Proton is, that Proton makes the hard part of privacy accessible to everyone (PGP in email, E2EE for users) without doing anything besides creating an account. Every privacy focused company has Monero as a donation/payment option. There's:
- Tor
- GrapheneOS
- Mullvad
- Invidious instance (at least inv.nadeko.net)
- Techlore channel
and more privacy-focused projects.I'm questioning how to pay for my Proton Ultimate plan when it expires as I don't wanna use my credit card due to bank monitoring even virtual one. So the only good option now is cash. Please support Monero

Dear Proton Team,
Andy's opinion is very absurd in the youtube podcast, I do not understand how a company that says it defends privacy, does not implement really efficient measures.

Dear Proton Team,
After listening to your response at, it seems to come down to the notion that "we support Bitcoin because it has a stronger network effect" and "we can build privacy on top of Bitcoin like email".
However I think this argument is based on a false premise. Monero and Bitcoin are not mutually exclusive, and the relationship between them is not a zero-sum game. Encouraging adoption of Monero can also lead to increased interest in Bitcoin, and vice versa.
Additionally, *when evaluating cryptocurrencies based on their actual use as a currency, Monero often demonstrates a stronger network effect.* Many large investments in Bitcoin are primarily for speculative purposes rather than as a medium of exchange.
With the potential illegality of Samurai Wallet, it appears there is no viable path to meaningfully enhance privacy on the Bitcoin network... meaning the argument of 'let's just build privacy on top of Bitcoin' has a very limited path forward.
The stated goal for creating a Crypto wallet is to increase the resilience of Proton in the event the political winds blow downward and Proton faces censorship of their product.
Well, adding Monero would enhance resilience while doing nothig to take it away. In the event that ProtonMail faces bans (as seen in Russia) or if political climates shift towards authoritarianism, I would urge everyone to FLAT OUT REFUSE to use Bitcoin for payments, regardless of any privacy layers implemented- as if things head that way there is significant risk things hit a breaking point where CUSTOMERS could also face repression. In such a scenario Monero is the ONLY viable option.

Monero is the standard in private transactions, really a shame that it is not yet usable to pay for Proton servies.

Honestly, a VPN that can't be purchased by Monero is completely useless for any private use.
I guess money by mail might be an option, but for an online company Monero is almost obligatory if you actually care about privacy -

I am sorry, but your thoughts on Monero on said Opt Out podcast are cheap, childish excuses for not having implemented (yet?) a way for accepting payments in Monero. As long as you want to be referred to as a privacy-first company, it would be best to start accepting payments in Monero. The longer you delay that feature, the more you resemble a privacy-pretend company.

I'm quite surprised that ProtonVPN only allows an option for Bitcoin, when Bitcoin is very bad for privacy. One of the reasons I chose another VPN provider was due to being able to purchase with Monero XMR.

Quoting: "If it were privacy first, Monero for payment, no ability to enter additional personal info (like Mullvad), and hassle-free tor access from soup to nuts 24/7/365."

What a good surprise to wake up with!
However, I think we would have all preferred if you gave us the answer you give in the video sooner instead of feeling ignored for years.
In hopes it all gets solved.

So happy to see this update. When Proton supports XMR, I will feel comfortable paying for the premium services

I think they didn't do their research and think Monero was premined or that just because the protocol is updated they think it's also controlled / centralized by not understanding how open-source projects evolve.
Being against Monero is being against privacy, I think I will have to change provider soon just because it's a red flag for me.

Been asking about Monero for years! Surprised this wasn't rolled out first. Good to see proton wallet but for a privacy by default company I'm shocked to not see XMR. Please add XMR option as well as Proton and Monero compliment each other

Monero IS private by default, therefore Proton should make it the primary payment method for their services.

If you claim Proton is "Privacy by Default" then Monero should be your focus as a payment option, not Bitcoin
