Lightning Network Bitcoin payment option
The Lightning Network is in beta, but it allows for instant payments (no confirmations) and almost 0% fees, provided the user has a channel open. You already accept Bitcoin... and the Lightning Network is a major upgrade to way people will use BTC to make payments. If you do it soon, you will also get a P.R. boost, as it will inevitably be mentioned in the Bitcoin media.
Since high fees on Bitcoin mainnet (and Ordinals), please Proton team, add Lightning Network Bitcoin !!!
Please add LN. It will be critical for businesses to have a lightning network strategy in the future. Check out what is going on with value for value with stackernews.com, Fountain podcasts, and Nostr. Current payment with Bitcoin is slow on Proton. It makes me want to move to a provider which has native LN support, even if they haven't got the features you have. With lightning payment is instant. You could do clever things like stream sats for payment on a minute by minute basis for certain services. LN is changing the world and growing organically through adoption and not through token speculation since the LN does not use a token. You need to do this.
My annual plan renewal is coming up and I was really hoping to be able to pay for it over the Lightning Network, but I was disappointed to see this is not yet supported. You're going to need to support it anyway in the long run, and as another user observed, doing it now will get you a PR boost.
Based on what I've heard, it's not even that much work, as I understand it. I heard in an interview, I forget where, that a Bitcoin company (probably Blockstream on the Blockstream Talk podcast, but it could have been a different one) was trying to promote lighting adoption on certain major exchanges, and even offered to fly out developers to set it up onsite. The interviewee said it was quoted to only take 2-3 days to get it all set up and integrated, and that was on certain major exchanges with massive volume. (The exchanges turned them down because they had the perverse incentive of wanting users to keep their BTC on the exchange, but that's irrelevant to my point). Getting it set up for ProtonMail should be comparatively simple, I would think. You presumeably already use a BTCPay server (if you aren't, you probably should be), and I know that Lightning support is available for BTCPay.
Please, just have someone send out an inquiry email to a company such as Blockstream, Voltage.Cloud, or any other vendor that your research shows to be a reliable source. I'm not promoting these companies over anyone else, but they are just names in the industry that came to mind so I give them here as examples. Do your own research, but please investigate this ASAP just to at least see what it would entail. It might end up being really easy for you to support for payments over lightning, and it would enhance user privacy, and further differentiate you from competition.
In conclusion: Lightning network has matured. Technical support, advice, and SaaS Lightning options exist and are relatively easy to find. Lightning provides better privacy for your users and lower fees for both parties. It will settle even faster that base-chain Bitcoin (which already achieves final settlement much faster than credit cards) while still being actual real Bitcoin (more accurately, being real "sats", the base unit of Bitcoin), and not some sort of wrapped placeholder token. For every user like me who wants it badly enough to come here, create an account, and write a mini-essay about it, there might be 10 users who would use it if it were available. And the users of the lightning network are only going to keep increasing. Get ahead of the curve. Support Lightning today!
This would be great, I think the Lightning Network has matured enough to make this a no-brainer.
It's been a long time since this original comment and the argument for doing it has only gotten stronger.
The lightning network is ready & easy to integrate. Truly a low hanging fruit.
Adoption is accelerating, dont be left behind.
Please make it happen!
The Lightning Network grows more and more in recent times. In my view every merchant should offer (and encourage) lightning payments alongside with old-fashioned on-chain bitcoin-payments.
For those who not know what the lightning network is: It is a 2nd layer transaction network based on (in this case) the bitcoin blockchain.
This is not an alterantive coin. With lightning you send/receive original bitcoin, just instant and practical without fees (which are sometimes are getting rediculous high when using on-chain-transactions instead of lightning)
Great idea, Lightning Network Bitcoin is a great improvement to the customer experience!
Lightning now has the current liquidity, privacy protections, and ease of use that one could argue it is dangerous to not incorporate lightning payments immediately.
*BOUNS POINTS if they have a public lightning node people can directly connect to.
I would instantly buy the maximum premium subscription when this is accepted
I agree, it's a win-win solution for supporters/customers and protonmail
Lets do this!
yes please. Have a transaction pending for a few days now which hasn't settled.
If you want something a bit more lightweight than btcpayserver check out, https://github.com/lncm/invoicer
Please add Lightning payments!
Lets make this happen!
Please! I want to use lightning.
Accept Lightning and you have a new paid customer for life
this could open up all kinds of new business cases for you - for example, I often have to sign up for services online and I am not yet sure if I like or need the service or not. I can either create a fake mail account or give them my real one.
With this, you could make a portal where I give you my protonmail address and you give me a one-off email address, I could then pay through lightning to forward mail to my main address. If I decide to keep it because its useful then I can pay you either with a credit card or through mainchain bitcoin.
This is just an idea, maybe its pretty terrible but my point is that this is a new type of payment method that is legitimately useful to have and could open up new business ideas.
