3. Automatic “Fastest” server option

   When I was using the free version, the “Fastest” server option would connect me to a recommended server, and I also had the ability to switch to another server within the recommended/fastest location if needed.

   Since upgrading to the paid plan, that option seems to be missing. When I select the fastest server, Proton automatically connects me to a server, but if I want to try a different server, I have to manually open the country list and select one myself.

   It would be very useful if Proton could bring back the same functionality for paid users—for example, after connecting to the fastest server, provide 2–3 alternative recommended servers or locations based on current speed, latency, and server load.

   This would make the “Fastest” option much more useful, especially for users who want to quickly find the best-performing connection without manually testing servers.

   Could Proton consider adding this functionality to the paid version as well?

6. Allow user to disable all Recovery options

   Even though I am aware that, due to its zero-knowledge architecture, Proton considers it extremely important for users to set up various options for account and data recovery, I am still annoyed that new recovery methods are constantly being introduced and that some of them are even enabled by default on existing accounts.

   I see this as a significant security risk: in particular, the activation without user interaction (as is the case, for example, with the option to reset the password via a logged-in web browser) on existing Proton accounts concerns me.

   Therefore, I would ask Proton to give users the option to disable all recovery methods for their accounts (this isn’t easily possible at the moment, since Proton, unfortunately, makes it difficult for users to disable all recovery methods) and, with this setting, also prevent any recovery methods introduced in the future from being automatically enabled.

   In my view, standing up for user freedom also means allowing users to configure even dangerous and high-risk settings themselves if they make a conscious decision to do so. Such an option could therefore be accompanied by a few warning messages before the user can activate it. However, I would very much welcome such a feature, as it would enhance security depending on the threat model.

7. Common Issues People Face in MySQL Migration

   Last month, one of my acquaintances, who happens to work as a sysadmin at a small logistics company, got in touch with me in a panic. One of their on-premise SQL servers was nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the company had decided to migrate to Azure SQL. He thought it was going to be a routine task to complete over the weekend. Instead, the migration took five days, involved numerous failed restores, and a few collation-related dramas. He had already attempted three different migration “hacks” that supposedly required no third-party software and ended up with two test databases in disarray before he decided to ask for help.

   Free / Manual Migration: Step-by-Step

   If you are determined to use a free but legitimate method to migrate your database to a new server, here is what you would typically have to do:

   1. Create a backup of the database that you wish to migrate. To do this, open SSMS, right-click the database, choose Tasks > Backup, and store the .bak file in the location of your choice.

   2. Transfer the .bak file to the destination server (or blob storage, in the case of migrating to Azure).

   3. Restore the database on the target server. Right-click Databases, choose Restore Database, and follow the wizard’s instructions. If you are restoring an MSSQL database to Azure SQL, you may want to use SqlPackage.exe (.bak file format is not supported by Azure). Alternatively, you can use the “Deploy Database to Microsoft Azure SQL Database” wizard in SSMS.

   4. Resolve any collation or schema-related issues. This step can be particularly time-consuming, as you will have to make sure that all users, logins, and permissions are correctly restored on the target server.

   5. Migrate data: you may either restore the database using the .bak/.bacpac file or use the Import/Export Wizard / bcp utility if you are using different versions of SQL Server. This step can take a lot of time, especially for large databases.

   6. Point your applications to the new database instance. Make sure to update all connection strings and firewall settings.

   Common Migration Pitfalls

   I asked my friend what went wrong during the migration, and he had quite a list:

   • MDF/NDF file issues: if the source database was faulty, any attempt to restore it on a new server would fail.

   • Version mismatches: he initially tried to restore the backup in SQL Server 2012 after taking it from SQL Server 2019.

   • Collation mismatches: the collation of the source and destination servers did not match, which resulted in many join-related errors.

   • Orphaned users: some users were absent on the destination server, while others had different permissions.

   • Absent objects: some functions, triggers, and foreign keys were lost during the migration.

   • Cross-database querying: Azure SQL does not allow cross-database queries and has a limited set of stored procedures and functions compared to on-premises SQL Server.

   • Large payloads: migrating large databases to Azure SQL often results in timeout errors.

   • Tools’ shortcomings: the tools that he used did not have an option to skip corrupt pages during the restoration process.

   • Time constraints: the weekend was not the best time to schedule a migration, especially since it involved databases with critical data.

   After helping my friend recover two test databases, I decided to investigate the issue further. It seems that many database administrators have similar stories and are now opting for a commercial solution called Kernel Migration for SQL Server. One of the main advantages of this tool is that it can be used to migrate both healthy and corrupt databases – all with minimal downtime. Users can preview all database objects before migrate SQL server database and transfer data directly to Azure SQL, Amazon RDS, or a local instance of SQL Server. All in all, Kernel Migration for SQL Server can be a great alternative to manual migration for companies that want to avoid the risks involved in using third-party tools.

    In the sidebar, next to the Report a Problem button, add a Request a Feature button that links to this website. I was using report a problem before for feature requests because I didn’t realize this website existed.
    Also please get rid of the bot comments spamming links in the comments of these feature requests

    I am looking to perform a GSuite to Office 365 Migration and went through the manual processes first. There are several ways of migrating data from G Suite to Microsoft 365, but I stumbled on some issues while trying.

    For a manual and/or simple migration, one can export data from Gmail via takeout or Google’smigration options and import the required data to Microsoft 365. Similarly, one can also export and import calendar and contact information if the data to be migrated is small. This is ideal for few users with less data.

    What are the common pitfalls?

    Failure to verify the source and destination accounts (users) before migration

    Missing attachments and old emails

    Poor user/mailbox mapping

    Duplicates created upon multiple user migrations

    Failure to migrate calendars, contacts, and emails

    Too many users to migrate manually.

    Other complications can include authentication errors, permission issues, failed mailbox migrations caused by large data, or migration job failure due to huge data.

    I stumbled on the Kernel GSuite to Office 365 Migration tool while searching for alternatives. The tool offers bulk migration and selective/incremental migration options to deal with large-scale data migration. Unlike the manual process, it does not require migrating each user’s data.

    For a user that has performed a Google Workspace to Office 365 Migration before, what approach worked? Were they able to adopt the free/manual option, or was it necessary to invest in a migration tool due to the volume of data or users?

12. Configurable session expiraion timeout

    In https://account.proton.me/u/1/mail/security#sessions I'd like to change the expiration timeout from 60 days to something like 2 days.

    I open proton daily on only one single device, so this should be fine. The long timeout of 60 days seems unnecessarily relaxed for me, could be a bit more secure.

13. Flexible Trash Retention Period – 30 Days Should Be Adjustable (7, 60, 90+ Days)

    Proton Mail currently offers the "Auto-delete unwanted messages" feature that automatically deletes emails in trash after 30 days. However, this retention period is fixed and cannot be customized.

    Requested Feature:

    Ability to individually configure the auto-delete retention period for the trash folder (e.g., 7, 14, 30, 60, 90 days or custom value)
    Same option should apply to the spam folder as well
    Separate settings per folder would be ideal

    This is a spin-off & more in-depth idea (at least in my opinion) of this suggestion:

    I was a bit confused on what exactly was wanted, but here is what I am looking for and hope many others will agree or add onto this suggestion.

    What is this looking to solve?

    Currently as it stands, proton users must navigate several pages or find the https://protonapps.com/ site, which still may direct users to web pages or wiki pages on the install process (e.g. Linux - Proton VPN). There is no easy central way to download applications, which may not seem as an issue to some, but it can be seen as an opportunity to expand and centralize the applications, if users wish to do so. This would not replace the current installers, but rather be an opt-in app management & access solution. Think adobe/m365, but not **** & 1000x better.

    What would it support?

    Simply every operating system/distribution will have its own primary installer (MacOS, Windows, & Linux) (Maybe android/apple devices as well). More specifically for Linux, you would be able to choose whether it is a native install (apt/rpm) or via flatpaks (proton would need official flatpaks at that time (kinda wanting this too for image based os).

    Besides that, you would be able to pick and choose which applications you want to install; you could choose the whole suite or a single application. It would check updates on startup, show release notes, etc. You can also access everything through it, similar to how on the web there is the apps icon, but instead of opening a new tab, the whole application swaps over to the chosen app.

    Personally, I have all my stuff with proton with a custom domain. Something like this would be a great QoL feature, & opens the gateway to better application support with flatpaks, better apt/rpm support, & other OS specific funsies.

    Allow users to set a notification for a specific date and time before the calendar event.
    At present, this is only possible if the event lasts a whole day; it is not possible if the event is at a specific time.
    Currently, if the event is at a fixed time, you can set a notification for X minutes / hours / days / weeks beforehand – that’s all.
