This really seems to be a killer feature that Google implemented in GMail early on. I just opened a support ticket asking about this feature, and I included 15 links of user requests for this feature, across UserVoice and Reddit, showing that there are literally hundreds of Proton Mail users who are interested in this feature. Hopefully we can get a serious response from them to honestly evaluate this request.

To the persons who say adding this _optional_ feature that users can configure _if they choose to_ would break the security... how? If you simply don't add any SMTP configurations to send as from within your Proton mailbox, you haven't lost anything. And the users who do chose to do so, can still send Proton-to-Proton by simply not selecting the SMTP config in the send a field. Nobody loses any security that wasn't there choice to lose. If I send a message from Proton to an external mailbox, it's going to use SMTP to deliver it. So why not let me setup my external SMTP mailbox to send through directly from Proton, so that I can have all my mailboxes aggregated in my nice secure Proton mailbox?

I have nearly 20 years of using GMail. I won't be replacing my gmail addresses with Proton address in all the myriad of places and contacts who have it. The "send as" feature where I can configure SMTP settings for my personal domain and then use a single mailbox to send as any of my GMail and personal domain emails is pretty much the one thing that keeps me using GMail instead of Proton. I don't actually have _any_ correspondence with other protonmail.com or proton.me mailboxes, so the E2EE between Proton mailboxes is already a moot point if I'm only really sending emails from Proton to external mailboxes. There seems to be quite a few requests for it, too, if you search over in the Proton subreddit.
