Note that tags can be implemented as nested, so they cover the requirement for nested folders as well.

I was surprised to discover that, when I create a new email address, it functions as a username for login purposes.
I went out of my way to create a strong sequence of characters as my username.
If I want to create a more convenient email address to hand out to some people, I don't want that guessable string to function as a username. This weakness means that I never create additional email addresses.

We have given this quite a bit of thought, but at the present moment, it is not clear the advantages would outweigh the disadvantages.
The biggest problem is search. Encrypting all metadata would break metadata search entirely on the web client as there is still no efficient way to handle search of encrypted data within a browser.
Secondly, metadata encryption’s value from a privacy standpoint is also somewhat dubious. Because we ultimately must deliver the message to the recipient, we must know who the recipient is. At the current time, there still isn’t any proven and viable way to work around this.
Metadata encryption is an area of continued research for us, and when the opportunity arises and the technology for doing this matures, we will definitely implement it in ProtonMail.

I agree with those wanting TAGS.
Note that tags can be implemented as nested, so they can be used as folders.
Implementing this feature means that the value of an Unlimited plan is equal to the savings of cancelling Dropbox, etc.
Like many Mac users, I buy a lower spec Mac, because the cost of a larger internal SSD is so great.
For this reason, I use an external SSD as the location of my Dropbox folder.
Since Proton Drive keeps all its files on the internal drive, I can't keep many files in there. This makes my 500GB wasted.
If I could create a folder on the external drive and then ask Proton Drive to keep it synced, I could drop Dropbox, saving me more than the cost of Proton Unlimited.
In fact, if you add the cost of Dropbox and the cost of a VPN, Unlimited becomes a no-brainer.
