I completely agree, this is my biggest frustration in using Proton for me and my family (as a family subscription) as we all have a lot of photo's.
All of us have Samsung Ultra series phones and editing a photo makes it upload twice, without any means to deduplicate. Also the albums from Samsung to not move over to Proton so I wanted to make albums manually and then periodically remove the photos not in any album, but I can't filter on this either.
Right now the whole Photo backup is completely unusable and I pay double for it to do it somewhere else. If this isn't fixed when my sub ends, I probably wont renew.

This is one of the most valuable things I want to see in Proton (together with more photo management options). I would make life without Google possible (well, except play store)... U expected this to work when I got Proton, so it's one of the things I will evaluate when my fist 2yrs of family sub are over
