A flatpak is the best way to get around the packaging issue. Rclone does not really work for large filesystems.

Since there is no proton drive app on linux, I am forced to use the rclone API but it is a bit tedious and unreliable. I work with the OnlyOffice worksheet app but it does have some bugs. If it means I can keep my worksheets on the cloud and easily edit them in my browser, a worksheet up would be welcome. If a proton drive for linux is easier, please do that.

These days it is very common to package applications across linux distros into flatpaks or appimages. These would be easy to manage for the ProtonVPN team and provide us with a working GUI app instead of the hard to manage cli client.

I use a universal blue distro, which means I do not use rpm or deb package manager directly and instead use homebrew for new packages. Flatpak works but this may be an issue with permissions needed. Hope there is flexible enough solution instead of "here is a deb package"
