How can we improve Proton Mail?

You've used all your votes and won't be able to post a new idea, but you can still search and comment on existing ideas.

There are two ways to get more votes:

  • When an admin closes an idea you've voted on, you'll get your votes back from that idea.

  2. Improve addressing with extension character; allow hyphen (-); use correct sender address.

    1. Add the use of a hyphen (-) as the extension character, in addition to plus (+). Reasoning is below.

    2. When a message arrives for example-bob@protonmail.com, replies sent by the recipient should automatically show example-bob@protonmail.com as both the header sender and the envelope sender. The reason should be obvious.

    Why hyphen (-) in addition to plus (+). The use of plus (+) tells people that you are using an extension, while the use of hyphen (-) makes the address look like an ordinary address.

    Many buggy websites reject email addresses that contain a plus.

  3. Something like Google Translate - Automatic translation

    I live in another country. Would be great to have an automatic English translation embedded in our emails or at least a choice to translate! Please help!

  4. Sweep delete future emails from a certain address

    I don't want to have to delete every individual spam email I get. I want to be able to have a "sweep" feature that deletes all current, as well as future, emails from an address.

  5. move the "All Mail" folder far away from the Trash folder

    Please (For God's sake) move the "ALL MAIL" folder far away from the TRASH folder! You have it directly underneath the Trash folder and I've accidentally emptied/deleted "all mail" twice now thinking I was emptying my Trash folder. So now I all my inbox mail is permanently gone.

  7. Not automatically marking a message as read

    It would be nice to have a default option that allows you to keep messages as unread when selecting/viewing them.

    I would like to keep all messages as unread until I manually mark them - this allows me to keep better track of what I need to respond to.

  8. Send As (from external address - Add support for EXTERNAL SMTP servers in apps)

    It would be nice to be able to send an email as a different address.
    Google has a feature like this. So I can send from my schools .edu account from inside my personal gmail.

    The 'variables' extension described in RFC 5229 (https://tools.ietf.org/html/rfc5229) is key in unlocking even more of the potential of the Sieve mail filtering language.

  10. More actions to filters

    Hi.

    Actions like reject (return reject code to sender and don't save the message), delete (accept message, but don't save it), mark as spam and never mark as spam should be added to filter's options.

  11. Folders and labels to organize the contact list

    It is necessary in Protonmail to organize the list of contacts in folders or lists and even tags that can be named as desired. This would allow better organization of the contact list. Being able to organize the list of contacts in folders and labels is something that other mail clients do not have.

    As an example, I personally would like to organize my list of contacts in "My Contacts", "Customers" and "Other Contacts".

    I also suggest that all addresses that are automatically added to the contacts list go to a folder called "Other Contacts". This already does other mail…

  12. Readability

    In the standard web interface after accounting for branding, buttons, email headers, and footers, the actual content of an email is restricted to about 3 lines. Trying to read a long email is painful. I couldn't find a way to either a. Make a dedicated model pop up for a single message for reading or b. Expand the existing read window to allow for more text to be read at once, in any view.

  13. Faster syncing and displaying speed

    The speed of displaying and syncing is not very slow but a bit disappointed comparing to the other mail services I've used (Blackberry Hub, Gmail). It's just not as smoothe as it can(should?) be.

  14. Grouped conversation sorting

    When grouping conversations, it sorts the mails old to new. Can you add a sort function? I'd like the recent mails to be on top of the list.

  15. Conversation view on Android app

    Having threads on desktop is great, but I mostly use email on my phone. The lack of threads in the android app makes my inbox a real mess and conversations are hard to follow.

  16. spam

    It appears that SPAM works perfectly except when there is a filter applied. For example, a filter by recipient matches user2@example.com then move to folder user2. It would be nice to have the system SPAM process ahead of the filter process or even the option where the filter is applied before or after system SPAM process.

    i was looking for a great security account, and i think i found it but...
    i was looking to use as family or for my acompagnie, but i mist important feature.

  18. an option to switch the signature on and off

    I would be nice to have an option for signature usage. I would like to be able to specify when my signature is used. For example, new emails - use the signature, for reply emails - don't use the signature. I currently am deleting the signature on reply emails.

  20. Ability to select all or multiple from search results

    It would be nice to be able to select multiple emails from the search results for processing, say moving to a folder.
