1. Better technlology to bypass websites that actively block VPNs

   I am increasingly facing websites that actively block people when connecting via VPN. I see this trend increasing and it is a threat to privacy.

   There was already a feature request in this regard labeled as "finished". Funny enough, the website mentioned in that request still doesn't work with the VPN enabled: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/932836-proton-vpn/suggestions/46860823-bypassing-vpn-blockers-option

   It is really easy for websites to see that the connection is via a VPN and we need better technology design to avoid being blocked for the wrong reasons.

   I certainly don't want to connect to banks or other sites without a VPN connection, especially when in public networks. But even soccer teams, museums and other websites are actively blocking connecting via VPNs in order to "prevent" frauds or DDoS attacks.

   So a lot of improvement is needed to preserve our right to privacy and safety.

3. IPV6 support in WireGuard Configuration Files

   IPv6 is supported when using certain desktop apps, and so all of the IPV6 endpoints must also exist for the various VPN servers. However, they are omitted in the WireGuard configuration files when downloading directly (for example, for using wg-quick or other WireGuard application directly).

   IPv6 endpoints are now included in WireGuard configuration files when downloading them directly from Proton VPN account

4. Linux CLI connection status

   I use the ProtonVPN CLI on my Ubuntu MATE system. (I don't use the GUI app because I do not use Gnome.)

   It works well and I'm happy with it, but after I enter protonvpn connect and it exits successfully with news of an established connection, I don't know much of anything about the connection itself.

   According to the CLI --help argument the available commands are: ('signin', 'signout', 'info', 'connect', 'disconnect').

   I would like to suggest adding a command to this list, "status". That is, protonvpn status .

   This command would show whether the VPN connection is established or not, which city, and maybe some other basic info (health check, bytes passed, whatever).

   Note that this is different from the existing 'info' command which only shows Proton account login info for the VPN, nothing about the connection itself.

   This would be a big help while managing my VPN connection on my desktop.

   protonvpn status will now return connection information.

5. Exclude unwanted countries from the list of random and fastest servers.

   It often happens that in random or fastest mode, a connection is established through servers in countries that are not desirable for many people.

6. Sort by Server Load

   It would be great if you could select a country in the Proton VPN app and then sort by server load. That would save having to scroll through a huge list to find the servers with the lowest current load.

9. Windows ARM64 app

   Create a version of ProtonVPN that supports and is optimized for ARM64 based systems, that for example run on Qualcomm's Snapdragon X chips. As of right now, the ProtonVPN app cannot connect to any servers in the ProtonVPN app, this suggests that the drivers for the "connection card" in these systems are different and need to be specifically utilized to work.

10. Android Widget

    A widget for Proton VPN on Android would be nice. The ability to turn on/off the last connection profile would be the main purpose of the widget. So if you selected Fastest, it would search for the fastest server again. But if you selected a country it would only pick from that country again. And if you picked a specific server, it would try to use that server again. Same idea for Secure Core, P2P, and Tor.

11. macOS/iOS Feature Parity with Windows/Android

    The Windows and Android apps often lead the way with new features, and those features frequently never make it to macOS or iOS.

    For example, profiles are much more configurable in Windows/Android than they are in the Apple apps. Similarly, if you look at the requests on this site, there are many that are planned for Windows/Android … but will never come to macOS or iOS.

    The macOS and iOS apps are surprisingly limited -- you can't even tell what city you are connected to in the macOS app -- and it's frustrating knowing that other platforms enjoy much more robust feature sets that simply haven't been brought to other platforms.

    The Windows and Android apps often lead the way with new features, and those features frequently never make it to macOS or iOS.

13. Further Profile Customization - Select Sever by State/Province and City

    Hey all, after using Proton VPN for years, I love the features and options. However, one option I'm finding I wish I had was further server profile customization.

    For instance, if I make a profile for the fastest server in the USA, I cannot select by State. However, when using family streaming accounts on a VPN, I find selecting a local State/Province helps with speed and accessibility. If my family is in Texas and doesn't normally use a VPN, but I log in to the account while connected to a Chicago VPN server, I find the streaming app doesn't work or load until I select and load a server in the same State. Further, different US States have different internet laws. If we can customize to this degree, there might be different cities in the same State/Province we should be able to further select or customize to.

    So a further profile customization is not only a fix that could be easily applied, but acts as a workaround for the problem here.

15. Add Settings toggle to disable pop up promotional ads from Proton (e.g., Black Friday promo)

    As a paid Proton subscriber, when I open Proton VPN I am receiving a pop up modal advertising Proton promotions, such as the Black Friday 2024 deals. I can close the pop up, but it will reappear from time to time. I believe it is hostile to the user experience to not give us the option to opt out of annoying advertisements.

    Please add a Settings toggle in the application that will enable users to disable pop up promotions from Proton.

    User Acceptance Criteria:
    Given I am a paid subscriber of Proton,
    When I open the "Proton VPN" application Settings,
    Then I should have an option to toggle a "Disable promotional Proton advertisements" setting.

16. Script managing WireGuard ProtonVPN for Linux using CLI only

    I've put together a POSIX shell script allowing you to use ProtonVPN in Linux using only the native wireguard and Linux core utils having the script managing all aspects of the network such as routing and which DNS server to use when the VPN is up or not.

    It works very well for me so I brushed it up with more thorough error handling, documentation and examples in case more people have an interest in it.

    Basically it allows you to generate any number of protonvpn-wg-configurations you like and put them in your /etc/wireguard folder, the script selects up one of them based on certain criterias you decide (it can for example automatically determine the peer with lowest latency to you) and brings up the VPN fixing DNS (if you wish) and routing, cleaning everything up when the VPN is brought down.

    I've written it with network managers in mind and am using it with ifupdown in Debian.

    Proton is welcome to put it on their pages if they like.

17. Show the US split into states and then show the servers once you select a state

    The US states have different privacy laws and are the same size as many countries on the list, so I feel like when you select us you should get another selection for states before seeing the servers. It would make using US servers much more manageable

    Buried in Apple's tvOS 17 announcement is support for 3rd party VPN apps on tvOS. It would be amazing if Proton VPN had a tvOS app.

20. Make Proton VPN's Windows UI More Consistent with Mobile Apps

    I wanted to share some thoughts on the UI for Windows, it doesn’t really match the look and feel of the Android or iOS versions (though I haven’t used the iOS app in a while, so I’m not sure how it looks now). Compared to the Android app, the Windows version feels less polished.

    The font looks outdated, and the unrounded corners on things like the flags and the window itself clash with the design of the app, since there are rounded corners alongside them. Also, it should show the cities of the server location, and have better custom profile icons like the mobile app.

    This isn’t a high priority issue, but updating the windows app to align better with the mobile versions would improve the experiences for some people, and just make the experience smoother.
