Linux Client
Proton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Linux client for Proton Drive.

And, when they finally get there, it needs to work better than the one(s) that we alrady have. I've mentioned this several times in responses to the "Linux Client" issue. I used the MacOS client. It's somewhat temperamental. I got so tired of waiting on the linux client that I sought other solutions. I tried a number of them. Some were garbage. The only one I found that "just works" is Filen (Filen.io). My description would be that it works like the exiting Proton clients should work. The upload/download speeds are amazing compared to the Proton client. For 200 GB, it's about $2.34 per month USD. It's based in Germany so it's covered by GDPR (good enough).

i really wanna ditch my dropbox and I am working on migrating to Linux very soon so if this could be delivered within 6-12 months i'll be a happy camper =)
Nothing fancy needed. just so i can sync my directories on the home directory and sharable files would be enough for me.

I'm a heartbeat away from leaving MS bc of privacy... which is why i starting moving everything to proton. So I'm sorta shocked and definitely bummed to see linux integration seems to have stalled.
Rclone allowed me to pretty easily mount onedrive to linux. I don't even care about a gui but something cli for linux would be great. Maybe if you were able to provide an api for rclone to develop something it could be fantastic. from what i understand there's been no rclone dev for the past year bc it seems they have no dependable api to work with.
i'm hoping this can be worked out in weeks rather than months bc as of right now i'm all of a sudden wonding if proton drive is feasible. and i'm already paid for 2 years.
just cli would be great for now.

Agreed, Proton is forcing users to remain with Google for Drive or Dropbox. That is not adequate for paying customers who want to leave those surveillance and advertising giants completely.

I was surprised and disappointed to find there isn't a Linux app for Proton Drive. We're paying for the service, this really needs to be prioritized. Microsoft is going to keep bleeding users as Windows becomes more and more about advertising, surveillance and AI slop. Not having a Proton Drive app for Linux makes it hard to abandon Windows completely.

Now I've switched totally to Linux (Fedora) and thus become very important to have a native Linux Client for Proton Drive. I'll try Rclone in the " hacker spirit" of a Linux user but I'll approciate such a developemnt for the lazy ( beginner) Linux user

This was a huige oversight on my part when i signed up for family account. I saw phone apps and assumed desktop apps were already covered. How doesn't proton drive have a desktop app yet?

Hurry up with this already! I made the switch away from Microsoft recently, and this really important. Why do you waste time on docs and photos when basic functionality of one of your core products is missing.
Poor form, Proton!

Self explanatory. Dropbox enables users to have a desktop copy of their file tree so that files, pdfs, images and photos are easily accessible from all programs. There's no reason Proton shouldn't do this, and in fact I'm now sorry I moved my personal stuff from dropbox to here. Guess I won't be moving my business files anytime soon. This is ridiculous.

How do you guys just keep chugging past this? Why is it not started. Docs (I don’t need), photos (okay whatever).
No effective Linux client, without doing backflips.
Visionary, for now. Hoping you’ll get this squared away, before an another viable competitor does.
Your paying customers (I’d wager) are nerds like us…
Make this happen: YESTERDAY!

I've been using Proton for 6 years now, but I'm still missing full sync for Drive.
I use Linux (PCLinuxOS, which does not use systemD), but currently only save my most critical personal data, which I have to upload manually.
A sync client for Linux would really help me get rid of second-hand solutions for the rest of my data.

Even as a 2 year Proton Family subscriber I've been forced to make workarounds (syncing the families Linux boxes via unison to server running a windows VM with ProtonDrive ... which is a huge overhead on disk (have to have dual space for all the 3 TB of ProtonDrive Disk) and on system resources on the server... so we actually went for the Infomaniak Drive solution instead (kDrive) which also, for all platforms, do have much better document features via ONLYOFFICE) ... once our 2Y family subscription with Proton is about to run out we'll evaluate again and I really hope Proton by then is in a state that we stick to it rather than moving all services away from Proton. I do like Proton's dedication to privacy and their claims that you listen to the community ... but for us to stick around for another 2 years, you need to live up to listening to your users by providing the thing the community urges for most now: a Linux client for Proton Drive.

As so many others I'm in the transition from Windows to Linux, and I am currently a M365 family subscriber as both me and my wife use it, and in the future my four kids will too. However I would like to break my ties with Microsoft. My plan is first to make a dual boot windows/Linux and then buy Proton ultimate, and once I've transitioned, I will help my wife do the same. However I won't buy Ultimate and start the transition until a Linux client or API is made available. So if you want to have more paying customers, this is a requirement.

Not having Drive for Linux is a gaping hole in the current Proton ecosystem.
However, the recent announcement that Proton is building a Drive SDK is promising.
Please at least focus on getting the API released ASAP, so that others can write their own solutions to interface with Drive in an officially supported manner.

In my opinion, having an official client for Proton Drive would be a major competitive advantage for Proton, especially considering its target audience and the fact that Google and Microsoft currently do not offer official support for Linux. As a result, the community often resorts to alternatives like Dropbox or Mega.nz, just to name a few. Another option has been using unofficial clients, which can pose security risks or significant issues due to lack of maintenance or implementation errors. However, this tends to drive away regular users.
A flatpak client would suit the vast majority of LINUX users.
