Linux Client
Proton Drive really needs the ability to sync desktop files automatically. This post focuses on a Linux client for Proton Drive.

If you're going to block RClone, at least bring out your own proton drive for linux. You're literally screwing paid users over by ignoring an obvious gap in your offerings.
This is the second most voted on, and MOST commented on thread. How Docs got more votes, I'll never know. Either way, this should be your second priority.
Sort it out!

Yes... there are a lot of Linux distributions but IMHO a good starting point to provide a Linux client and keep the community happy would be having a repository with a .deb and .rpm packages. No more no less

Since the inception of Proton I'm waiting for a Linux client.
Rclone implementation is helping but still imperfect.
pCloud did it and used AppImage, FUSE and some other open libraries.
I'm conscious such development will take time and is resource consuming. But holding it means it is also holding people from transitioning fully from Windows to Linux. Valve and Proton (the other one) did a lot of good to gaming industry and gaming on Linux. Now Proton (this one) needs to invest cash in it and do the switch.

I thought I had made the right choice to go with Proton checking that it has Linux versions for all services, but I didn't check drive... And here I am having phased out my Mac and bought a Slimbook and I can't access my files (yes I know the web interface, but that doesn't count).
Oh man, am I disappointed. Will have to get pCloud or NextCloud. :-(

In my opinion, Proton should also package it's Linux clients using the common Linux universal apps standards like Flatpak, Snap and AppImage.
Supporting package manager formats of specific distribution families like is mostly convenient when they are delivered through the distribution's package repositories.

when beginning to switch over to linux as my only operating system (besides android), I never thought that proton, of all things, would be the one that breaks the transition. I thought you were privacy focused? I thought proton was made by people that are similarly annoyed by what windows is changing into. I'm a bit disappointed and hope that you already are working on this.

Hello, this is Privacy101, a volunteer mod.
I am relaying a comment from the Proton CEO Andy Yen from the 2024 Proton Community AMA:
We're currently looking at options for how to fund this. It's an expensive development because Linux has so many different flavors and we need deep integration with the filesystem, and it is not yet clear if there are enough Linux users that would allow us to offset the cost of this development. Like many things Linux, it may eventually just have to subsidized from Proton's reserve budget. That doesn't mean it won't get done, it will just take longer since we are also subsidizing several other efforts at this time, such as the Proton VPN free servers for elections campaign: https://protonvpn.com/blog/free-servers-before-elections -Andy

Yeah... I just moved from Windows 11 to Linux Mint. I just love it but unfortunately there is no drive client for Linux. Maybe i should find another provider.

When I joined Proton this wasn't a huge issue for me. As Windows moves more towards spyware I am wanting to slowly migrate to Linux... This would really help.
As much as I appreciate the new services, Drive and Calendar are hugely neglected. Maybe a bit of love is needed, Pass is great and by far the most polished service, but Wallet, Auth and Lumo are just solutions which already exist imo

Almost 5 years and no CLI, no GUI, no CDK, no API Docs, no nothing. Disappointed.

A Linux Client is desperately needed... I'm a little surprised this has been overlooked for this long. Even a headless service would help for now if the UI is not ready.

Any update on this? Linux is a useful part of maintaining control of our data. I’ve seen multiple blog posts discussing the data collected by Windows and MacOS but we still do not have full Linux support

I believe that Proton's brand, that is focused on privacy and security, should have a stronger presence in the Linux community. Drive is definitely one one of those critical products in my opinion.

I think I speak for a lot of us when I say that I use both Windows and Linux. My daily driver might be Windows, yes, but I use Linux for a lot of different reasons and I would like to be able to sync certain files to my drive. Considering me a Windows user and assuming I don't care about a Linux client is a big oversight. Personally, I don't need a gui-based app for linux (but it would be nice) - a CLI application would suffice

Really need this, at least a CLI that I can use to sync some files, it doesn't have to be a full desktop app from the initial release

The current ProtonDrive roadmap has gone from "not in my lifetime" to this: "At the same time, we’re continuing to improve the SDK — preparing it for public release and ensuring it provides a solid foundation for the upcoming Linux Drive app, a popular favorite on the community wishlist."
Of course, I'll believe it when I see it (still waiting for a Contacts client too), but a little hope is always nice.

Please add sync integration for Linux. With Windows, you're able to sync the hard drive with Proton Drive. Can't do that for Linux.
This lack of support increases my frustration, the workload, and my complications to iron out. I might need to create my own server just because of this. That's a lot of work.Proton is a great service, and I've also noticed that it can tend to put more focus on making new products rather than fully fleshing out and maturing what it already has created. This is not a good idea, because your existing user base might get fed up. Aside from that, good work everyone.
