Proton Photos
basically Google photos, but better because it's encrypted.
As in, a mobile app for backing up and organizing phone photos.
Maybe we could pay a monthly fee for access to Photos, Drive, and VPN service. I'd much rather support an independent company than Google
Hi everyone,
The Proton Drive photo backup for Android and iOS is already out.
Please see the announcements for:
iOS: https://proton.me/blog/proton-drive-photo-backup-ios
Android: https://proton.me/blog/proton-drive-photo-backup-android
We'll continue working on developing more functionalities to help you protect your most precious memories. Thanks for your continuous support!

Same for me: this is pretty mandatory functionality to migrate from our current cloud services (OneDrive, Nextcloud self hosted). The lack of this kind of functionality is holding me back to switch to Proton with both my family users, as well as my businesses.

Agreed. iCloud is too convenient, it syncs all your photos and the interface is clean and snappy, the functionality of iCloud photos is too handy to give up especially when there is no secure alternative, not that Apple would allow you to use Proton Photos ( ProPhoto? Photon? ) as the default photo library on iOS but it's certainly worth a shot. I worry that even if Proton comes out with a photos app it will take a long time for it to get on par with iCloud photos as it has taken them a long time to add features to Proton Drive...

I would drop icloud if this was available. I have much more photo storage than document storage. I'm not currently subscribed to premium drive because it lacks this feature

If not building your own, this project has come a long way and feels the most like google photos https://immich.app/, investing/contributing/integrating in this open source project would be awesome.

At least an automatic photo synchronization from the phone to Proton Drive is needed (critical).

Exactly what I need, if this was implemented I would drop my iCloud+ plan !
Amazon Photos used to have a good sync between iOS photos and Amazon Photos, they even supported Live Photos ! ...
Please bring this to iOS (and don't forget Live Photos )cheers ! keep it up ! :)

This is the only thing keeping me from loving Proton's services. Most of the reason I got Proton Drive was to store photos and it's frustrating that there's no real support for photos.

I subscribed to proton for 2years as I hope to see this function. I wont be needing tresorit, nord as all vpn, mail, back ups including photos are going to be available with proton. I do hope this will be done sooner than later!

The need that individuals need Proton accounts in order to upload the images in the first place poses the biggest obstacle to the adoption of Proton Photos by networks of families and friends. People whose minds I'm attempting to change don't want to sign up when they already have an inbox (Google) they like. Non-registered users are considerably more likely to join an account in the future if Proton can offer them a low-commitment, enjoyable user experience for https://laptopwise.com/best-gaming-laptop-under-1500/

I have been using Nextcloud for my file and photo sharing for the past year. It has been a fun and diverting pastime over the last year.
Would really recommend that Proton start a Nextcloud hosting platform.
The maintenance time involved with keeping a Raspberry Pi 4 up and running for family and friends is more than I anticipated as a 64 year old.

I have thousands and thousands of photos on my mac that I'd love to be able to share with family, but never trusted any of the platforms out there. Since you are such a secure platform, this is the first time I'd consider sharing.
From a features perspective:
1. All of my photos are currently organized into event folders that have dates, location and event name.
2. Each photo is tagged with people names.
3. Provide capability for invited users to search based on date, event, location, person. Also, I'd be happy to beta test this!

For my friends and family who go on trips together all the time and need a place to upload photos afterwards, Google Photos is the go-to solution. I would love to replace it with Proton Photos.
There are a few things which keep Google Photos sticky IMO:
- We assume everybody in the group already has a Google account so uploads are frictionless
- We like to get together after the trip and view the slideshow on a large TV together and Google Photos has a really nice interface for going through an album with several hundred photos
- Sharing, commenting, and liking of specific photos within an albumThe biggest challenge to Proton Photos adoption by groups of families and friends is the requirement that people need Proton accounts to upload the photos in the first place. People I'm trying to convert don't want to go through the process of signing up when they already have an inbox (Google) they are happy with. If Proton can provide a low-commitment, pleasing user experience to non-registered users, these people are much more likely to create an account in the future.
From a cryptographic standpoint, can we think of clever ways for Proton Photos to be engaging to people without Proton accounts? The ability to preview password-protected albums before downloading is one great example of this and it was announced as an upcoming feature on /r/protondrive last week.

This idea is also posted here: https://protonmail.uservoice.com/forums/945460-general-ideas/suggestions/16564432-proton-photos
That's almost 400 votes and would land at #11 on the top General ideas, or #6 for Drive ideas.
Agree with most other users, a replacement for Google Photos would be very welcomed. Proton Photos would have to deliver a mobile app, categories/directories (parent-level) and albums (child-level), sharing albums (add/remove members at the album or directory level), group share (ability for only album members to upload; or public link to upload). Include ability to add tags, filter by tag, and search by tag.
